24 hp Honda

I've got a 24 hp Honda that stopped working. I found the siphon for the fuel pump was not sucking so I blew out the hose (into siphon/engine) and it worked. Now with fuel flowing, still won't start. I pulled the carb and replaced with an another. Now it will start, but runs weak. I pulled the air filter (new) and found that it ran very smooth... only there is a lot of blow back (air out of the intake). The rocket arms appear to be well adjusted and placed... Any ideas?

I fiddled a lot with the rocker arms to see what differences I could get (anything to not have to pull the heads!). I managed to get the blowback to a minimum, but still happening. It happens strong when shutting down. This machine is getting old, but it is the rig assigned to schools, and class is in session soon!

Adjust the valves to the proper clearance (I'll get it to you later, when I get into the office). And get a new air filter.

Intake - .006
Exhaust - .008

If the engine is real old, it may be in need of a valve job.

The air filter doesn't need to be replaced if it's clean. When you stated that it ran better without one, I assumed it was dirty and clogged.

Did you oil the foam prefilter? I don't simply because many times the oil gets sucked out of the foam and impregnates the paper element, clogging it up.

I measured the valves at the rocker arms and got what you suggested and it ran great in the garage. The crew says it's running great and they seem happy with it too. I'll likely still pull the heads, clean them up, and better measure the valves while it's apart. I've got plenty of spare parts, might as well use some.
I no longer have a pre-filter on this machine. It deteriorated long ago... Is that a very necessary component?
