10 GPM Through 200' x 3/8" Hose

As I understand it, running 10 GPM through 200' x 3/8" hose doesn't utilize the full capacity of a 10 GPM pump.
My question is this: Are both the flow and PSI restricted or just one or the other?

Thanks,
Jeff

You can run 10gpm thru 3/8 but you are going to get pressure loss, you will still get the flow as long as you use the correct tip size

With 8gpm going through 3/8" hose you will lose about 300psi every 100' of hose so I know you will lose even more pressure with 10 gallons per minute. I don't think anyone has ever talked about that before, that is a good question.

I know some guys use some 1/2" hose at the beginning and then use the 3/8" for the rest so it is easier to use and you don't lose as much pressure as you would if you used all 3/8" hose.

I think Russ at Southside Equipment would have the answer if anyone would.

I get a drip out of the bypass when using my ball valve to rinse with 200 feet of hose. If I use my surface cleaner with two 3.5 and two #3 tips I lose pressure and flow. A #13 tip is what I set my unloader with. With 10 feet of hose and a #13 tip I get full pressure and full flow. If I add 200 feet of hose, hose friction causes back pressure, which triggers the unloader and I bypass .6 gallons and I lose 900 psi. I have now changed to 4 #3 tips to compensate for the loss of flow ( which reduces pressure), and it seems to help. I mainly use a 10 gpm machine for the rinsing power, and using a ball valve I get 10 gpm's for rinsing no problem.

Great information Ralph,thank you.

Hey Ralph,..what engine (HP) are you running with your 10 GPM machine?

Considering sticking with 3/8" hose,..is going from 8 to 10 noticeable enough to really tell,..or is it pretty close? I am determing what I want to do,.I am currently running 8 GPM and find it as SOOOO much better than what I was using before,.but that was a big jump in flow,.just wonder what 8 to 10 was like. I love the flow,.and any extra I can get would be welcome,...just not sure if it's worth the extra cost of another engine and and pump.

I'm running a 20 HP Honda for the 8,.which is the minimum I think to be pushing 8 GPM,..but when I put it together I was going off the models I se for sale,...no big deal it works awesome,..but going to 10 I think I would need a bigger engine like the GX690 to get acceptable performance.

*From the Honda site: The GX630 shows 20.8 HP and the GX 690 shows 22.1 HP,..Only a 1.3 HP difference?

So I'm either missing something or Honda's GX 690( which is I think their biggest engine for this category?) is under powered for 10 GPM. Which requires 27 HP,..is that right?

Thanks Dave,..that is the kind of feedback I like. What PSI are you getting at the end of 200' of hose. I am thinking getting an Udor GKC38/20-GR (Gear Reduction) to match with a 690. I am running 8 GPM TSF 2021 currently. My only concern at all is I don't have space for belt drive so it will have to be gear reduction,..and I remember someone saying years ago that shaft keys tend to wear on 10 GPM quicker than when using 8 GPM?

*Also,..using the 8 GPM DS'ing is fine,..is there that much difference from 8 to 10 when DS'ing?

I think it around 2500-2800 PSI at the end of the 200 feet, its been a while since I checked. I have a belt driven one I can tell you belts have been a issue for me, I am getting it resolved I hope this week, but my brand new skid has been flexing, causing me to go through several belts until I figured out the real problem. I would almost trade it in for a direct drive but that foot print would not work for my set up. But I can tell you that once you go 10 gpm the 8 is almost like a pee shooter (almost)

The 690 used to say 24hp, until some govt regulation forced them to change by using their formula. I have a gx 690 an a gx 630. I have never run 8 gpm so I wouldn't know. But I am never going backwards! I went from a 5.5 to a 10 and it was ridiculous. I am in the process of building a flatbed. It is going to have two 8's tied together. 1/2" hose is in order. I have started buying parts and have a half inch hose coming soMI can get used to it. With a gx690 I get 2850 psi @ 10 gpm. My unloader stalled out at 2850(at the pump), which according to the charts require a 25.5 hp engine. Don't know what to tell you but that's what a gx690 puts out.

Thanks Ralph,..that is about the same PSI I get with my 8 GPM with the GX630,..which has been plenty sufficient. So the 10 GPM would be about the same PSI but with more flow.

Do you DS Ralph?

Thanks,
Jeff
Yes I use 2.1(3-5 gpm) orifice for plenty of soap, with 300 feet of hose. Orange spring unloader can take lots of bypassing, because using this injector brings the flow down to about 7 gpm.

Hey Ralph,.yea,.. that is the same injector I currently use with my 8 GPM,..And,..I have been using the Giant Orange Spring unloader for the past two seasons,..best unloader I've ever used. Thanks for the input.

One thing I really like about the 8 GPM is when using full flow you have some great rinsing power,..but when DS'ing the flow is restricted due to the soap injector,..and I like the way it pours the water out when opened up to full flow. So my thinking is,..if I get a 10 GPM and DS,..I am hoping to get closer to the rinsing power of an 8 when it's open full? Understand,Ha,Ha?

I may buy the Udor 10 GPM and bolt it up to the GX 630. If I can gain flow that would be great,..and is my main reason for going to 10 GPM,...I don't think the PSI difference is gonna be enough to warrant buying a
GX 690.
I only run a 19" Whisper Wash,..and is what I prefer,..I do 99% residential,..so not really looking to go up in size there. This is really the only place I need any PSI for the most part. Aside from a rotating nozzle once in a great while. What do you guys think of bolting it to the GX 630?

Worse I'd have to do is then buy the gx 690. Which I'm still considering anyhow,Ha,Ha,..

That is a good question, Ralph, how high can you spray soap with 10gpm versus 8gpm on a building? Thanks.
