Cold Weather Gutter Streaks

Here's a simple trick some may be able to use for getting gutters white even when it's cold. Add some acetone to your gutter cleaner,..I prefer Purple Power,..but as well as PP works,..when it gets too cold,..it kinda' just quits.

To start,...add 1 quart to 3 quarts PP and simply apply by your preferred method. You can adjust it to your liking from there. Costs more,..but at least it works in cooler temps.,..and really doesn't take alot anyhow when it's working so well. Charge accordingly.

Acetone evaporates very fast and is FLAMMABLE!! But,..when mixed with PP at the ratio mentioned above it loses it's flammability. It will also COMPLETELY mix with water!!

Read up on Acetone and use it to your advantage.

Have no luck in cold weather.

5 gallons of gutter grenade 5 gallons of glycol ether same as butly mix in 55 gallons an this will clean anytime any place.

Interesting Tip Jeff.....how long have you been using Acetone in your gutter mix for cold weather cleaning?

Hey Guy,..we started experimenting with this back in early Spring,..we ran into a gutter on a mobile home with streaks that just wouldn't budge,..I mean we were scrubbing with Magic Erasers and all,..streaks wouldn't move,....I was irritated to say the least,...told my helper to go soak a Magic Eraser with some gas,..worked VERY well,..HA,HA,...we laughed about it but decided there has to be a better product to use other than gas for the tough gutters. Did a little research on solvents, because that's what PP is,...and came across Acetone, so we tried it and it worked just as good as the stuff from the red jug, and seems a better choice,........ even at $15-$20 a gallon. Gonna look into 5 gallon buckets next time.

We did it numerous times last Spring,.and now for about the last couple of weeks,..we are able to go to work early,..like Summer hours,..because we can now get the gutters clean,..even in the cooler morning temps,..be curious to see how cold it will actually work?

It can be mixed down to desired strength,..it readily mixes with the PP and even water,..which was interesting to me,..I just assumed it was an oil based product,..
Being able to mix entirely with the PP gives a nice option for improving PP cleaning ability in the cold.

It's the main ingredient and even sometimes 100% of nail polish remover,..sold to women for years with ill effects on health.

Acetone is also relatively safe compared other things we use,..it has a PH of 7 and is also VOC and HAP exempt if that matters to anyone.

I'm sure with some experimenting, a stand alone product could be made from Acetone and a compatible surfactant.

As for now,..I'm just boosting the PP.

*Although Acetone is still a product to be used with caution and respect,..it's not what I thought it was.

What is PP?

Jeff. What does the acetone do to painted siding, vinyl siding etc if it gets on it. I had to repaint the front of a guys house (gray stucco) when I got some strong gutter grenade on it.

So is glycol ether and your point? When you add the glycol ether to the gutter grenade it tames it down a bit as far as the paint stripping effects but if you start low on the mix you should never strip paint anyway but it does happen if the potasium hydroxide is to strong. You can mix up a 55 an it last a long time an is very effective

Hey Al,..use it with caution,..especially the stronger you go. It doesn't seem to hurt paint that isn't in bad condition. In one case two days ago I was using it 50/50 with PP to clean an aluminum awning that was really gray,..just like gutters can get. Full strength PP wouldn't budge it,..the 50/50 worked really well,..and didn't hurt the paint.

I've used it full strength a few times already to remove some deck stain spotting on vinyl siding,.and also some tape residue. Didn't hurt anything.

Also doesn't seem to hurt glass.

**With these things in mind, anyone wanting to try this,..please read up on acetone and it's uses and drawbacks it may have.

@Jim Foley,..PP is also a solvent based product. Not sure what your point is,..maybe just being informative.
