Good evening,

I am looking at this cedar deck. It has multiple coats of sikkens semi trans cedar. The h/o would like to cover it with a cabots oil solid to match the logs. Am i safe to assume that after a thorough cleaning and proper prep there will be no stripping involved ?
 
Sikkens is a serious film former, I don't think you could effectively put anything over it without issues relatively short down the road. Definitely can't use an oil solid

The proper prep for that is stripping it off.

Would the problems arise just because of the sikkens? or would there be an issue with any brand/type of semi solid stain being covered with a solid?

I think i got it figured out, do to the fact that sikkens is such a film former and the fact that it has multiple coats it will need to be removed in order for the new stain to adhere correctly, correct?

The deck itself is five years old and has at least 4 coats of sikkens.

That is one nightmare. 4 coats is a difficult strip. Mold is in the finish and will grow through anything put on it.

but if i was to bring it down to bare wood i should be starting fresh. I guess i understand the "nightmare" part of it. from what i have been reading 4 maybe 5 coats of sikkens will not come off easy, from some older posts i read that hd-80 will be a good start to stripping. Most likley there will be some sanding involved and i do not expect to walk away from this in a day,that being said I would like to try and tackle this job, i dont want to just give up on it,

Go for it ! Most strip jobs are nightmares with sikkens . Eaco chem has a solvent based stripper thet may work for this strip job, $$$$$$ could be a little pricy but add it in.
 
Going to do a test spot first to see how it comes up, the more i talk to people about it the more of a nightmare it does seem.
 
The more you see difficult jobs and do them successfully the better and faster your knowledge will increase will wood. Only with experience can you judge future jobs. Always have the products with you to do test spot. Otherwise it's a big waste of time.
 
thanks guys im going over tommorow to explain the situation to the h/o. i am not interested in doing just a quick wash and restain because that wont work and will make me look like an idiot. the last thing i want is someone asking him who did the lousy job.
 
No staining this year. I guess which i am kinda glad about because i was nervous about dropping the 4500 on him to do the entire job. i told him the only way that i would put my name on it was if he did it correct. but i did get the wash and i am just fine with that.
