16hp briggs wont start

I killed the engine to pull the truck up and hasnt turned over since. Wires check out good. Battery still new. I put a screw driver across solenoid and still wont even try. I hear a clicking noise but nothing... Any ideas?

Around the starter is a metal band that holds the solenoid. That band acts as a ground. Try moving it around to get a good contact. If arcing across doesn't work, it may have melted inside and fused together.

Might be the starter if the sylonide is clicking.

Pull the recoil starter (or debris screen) off - 4 bolts, 10 mm heads...
Get ahold of the flywheel and spin it backwards. Sometimes the starter drive will engage the ring gear and stick. The starter can't develop enough inertia to turn over.

Do you have a fuse on that motor like the honda motors.

Thanks for all the replies. Its done this same thing before but with a little jiggle or two, started working again. This time a different story.

I wish it had a recoil Russ. Do you know if I could put one on?

Yes. You have to install the "cup" on the flywheel (one nut) and the recoil assembly. I'll get you pricing later this morning.

Terry, I need the model, type, and code numbers off your engine...there are 3 different recoil starters.

I took the elec. motor apart and the magnet sleeve was shattered. I guess that was the problem. I heard the vtwin is nearly impossible to start with the pull rope, is that true, otherwise ill get one coming.

Not true at all...I've got one on a go kart that I pull start all the time.
