FORCED To Reclaim on Fundraiser Car Wash

What we are talking here is a small oil boom in most cases, or a small filtration unit, about 3k to 4 k. What will happen, it will raise our pricing that's what.

This could be a blessing. You want to remove all of those fly by night hackers, this would be one way to accomplish that.

This is how it works here in California....

you get a filter
get it inspected by the local office
get on the approved list for the classification you are qualified to handle

Inspectors makes their rounds and as they do now by law.
They see an oil spill
They issue a warning with a possible fine of $1,000 in 30 days if the area is not cleaned up. $3,000 in 45 days and so on.
The inspector gives to the client an approved reclamation vendor list
Out of this list, only 5 contractors can do this type of cleaning and only 2 are local
He starts calling those 2 contractors who is closest to his location.
You bid accordingly.

This job would of only gotten you $50 bucks a year ago because of cut throating pricing by all of those fly by night contractors. Now its $500 or more, and this cut throat contractors are gone.

You do the job and you sign off on the citation by issuing them a cert of completion, giving to you with the permit process, to give to the customer. Three copies, Yellow for the customer, white to the inspector and pink for your records.

Can you make as much as 10 times what you are making now....YES. People on this site...INCLUDING ME... would not have these filters if we could not make MORE money then without them.

You know what, I am done. I have showed you guys that I make .24 cent a ft instead of .02 by posting checks on this forum. In 39 days I am making approx. 102k NET. ( Paid in 60 days) I just got done making 58k two weeks ago for 5 days of work. It was not always that way. I fought it just like you guys, until I realized how much money one could make just by complying with these simple requirements.

If You guys are content at making 40k a year... then keep going the way you are going. Keep making 40k. Me personally, I choose working 65 days a year taking off 300 days to be with my family.

I don't know about you, but I am in business to make a great living. If I just wanted to make $30 an hour, I would have taken a management job at best buy.

Glad your making all that money Jim, Im not envious, Im happy for you, one day I want to be there and I will.

But this part is as f'd up as it gets. The government is imposing heavy fines on the business owner if he doesnt get his oil spot cleaned. The government says he can avoid the fines by getting it cleaned by 1 of 2 companies that the government approves of (ripe for corruption). Is the government doing this because they are concerned about the environment? I doubt it, follow the money, that will lead you to why they are doing it. If they were concerned about the environment they wouldnt worry about the minuscule 500000 sq foot parking garages, they would be working on the several million acres of roadway that the government owns and maintains. Jim you couldnt come close in a year of garage cleaning to the amount of contaminates that come off the roadways every single day and go directly into US waterways.

Been there, done that, 18 years ago. So if your area is just now trying to stop it, at least for us, it did not happen.

So if you can't beat them, join in. Your 18 years late with this post.
The thing is, its never been an issue here, no one ever heard of it, until now and its still not an issue here, we are just working on keeping it from getting like yours.

HAHAHA, you think we are behind? We are just now wearing pastel colors and getting mullett haircuts here for the first time and we still think Ronnie Reagan is President and Elvis is still alive (just waiting on the UFO to bring him back)

Roger, your common sense is overwhelming. And we need to put a stop to volcanos and their pollution that dwarfs human efforts, and ants, I heard they make more greenhouse gas than us.

My point exactly they (government & big business)use more petroleum based products that they spread on the ground to create most roadways and parking lots.

Funny you should say that...In 1992 when I argued AGAINST filtration, I had research of all the oil from the California Highways that oil runs off when it rains. After all, they always say be careful on the first rain, the roadways are slippery.

Do you know their response was in 1992? I will never forget it...

That runoff is an act of god, we can't stop that....but your actions we can stop.

Never could overcame that argument. So I complied and got a filter. Almost went bankrupt. Only got 1 garage that year, which I paid back the loans I borrowed from my family ( about 25k at 8% interest. paid them back in 3 months from the date I borrowed the money ), then 2 garages the next year, then 5 and so on.

However, though your statement is totally correct.....it is not one that will win any arguments with them.

By the way, the above "statements of example" is just that.... an example. Some areas may have as much as 20 contractors or more who is complying with the codes. Others may have less. The contractors would be specialized according to their equipment capabilities. ( Smaller units, smaller jobs...Medium units for small to medium size jobs, and the big boys for the extreme jobs) The point here is that, there will be less cut throat contractors bidding. The $5 dumpster cleaning would be a thing of the past.

Stay In business? I have been filtering longer and more consistently than you, from what you yourself have told me many many times.

As far as staying in Business... that is a scare tactics unto itself. You know dam well I have been in business almost as long as you. You are three years older than me and have been in business 3 year longer than me. We net close to the same profit, though you gross way more than I and have way more expenses.

There were two classic marketing concepts back at the private college I attended in San Francisco. In my second year of marketing classes both different concepts was studied... Both are good and both had flaws in their own ways. One deals with high volume with low net returns and the lower volume with premium returns. Thats is what our marketing concepts are in our companies. Your the Walmart of pressure washing and I am the Macy's. Of course I must admit I shop at Walmart more than Macy's unless I need something special.

So around this September, it will be 21 years... vs your 24 years.

According to Robert M. Hinderliter and others in the field, filtration is coming sooner or later. I know that would hurt many successful pressure washers who currently DO NOT Filter. I can understand your heavy concerns for your business in wanting to fight this, even though as of today you are compliant. If this reaches your tough state as it has in California back in 1992, you would have to reprice your cost structure and adapt to using a filter as I do. ( Gas Pads, Oil bins, Parking Structures, Drive thru's, All fast food Restaurants, Garbage Bins etc.). I am sure that is a major concern if your trailers do not have filtration units on each one of them.

Good luck to you and I hope you stay in business when those laws come around to you as well. I am sure you will have no problems in outfitting all of your rigs with filters if your state requires them as in California.

I will say this again, I do not support filtration of cleaning sidewalks for the purpose of gum removal / soda stains.

Here are some pictures.

The first one is how we must put s "Plug / stopper " in the pipe AND then a 5 gallon bucket over it to insure that no water gets pass us.

The second is a quick run by pass of the oil that was removed. we usually do another 3 more procedures before we are finished in the oil removal.

The third photo is of us discharging into the local sewer. Permit required.

The forth is of my filter settlement tank. 550 gallons. We are at 425 gallons and filling up fast as the guys are rinsing from the floors above.

Wow, 1475 hits. This is something that people still wants to know. With 114 replies.

Boy Al, you posted a big one. At least we are not taking about some politics, we are at least talking about the issues, whether all agree or not...it's still the issues at hand that make a forum great.
