WEST HAVEN -- No one was injured Saturday when fire broke out at the Charcoal Chicken Restaurant at First and Elm streets. The fire at 71 Elm St. was called in at 12:43 p.m. Fire Capt. Bill Stacy said the fire was out in less than 15 minutes. Fourteen firefighters from the West Haven and Allingtown fire departments responded to the call.

Stacy said the fire started in the charcoal grill, went into exhaust ducts and exited onto the roof, where flames were seen. Firefighters had to cut the roof to put out the fire.

It was the third fire at the restaurant in recent weeks. "They do a lot of cooking; hundreds of chickens a day. The kitchen is now in a better spot," Stacy said.

A couple of employees were in the restaurant when the fire broke out.

Firefighters ventilated the first and second floors because a lot of smoke filled the areas.

No one was home in the three upstairs apartments when the fire broke out.

It is expected the restaurant will be closed for a couple of days, Stacy said.
