FORT WALTON BEACH -- The Waffle House on Miracle Strip Parkway, next to Red Lobster, is closed this morning, following a late night fire.

Captain Leann Waters of the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department said crews were called to the restaurant at about 10 p.m. for a fire in the hood system over the grill.

"They said they were burning some grease off some pans and it got into the hood system and the system didn't activate," she said.

She said when they arrived the restaurant was filled with heavy smoke. They were on scene about 40 minutes.

Gas was turned off to the restaurant. That will need to be turned on before the restaurant can reopen. Waters said she thinks it will reopen sometime Tuesday.

"We left it closed down last night," she said.
