Popular downtown Palo Alto restaurant Zibibbo may be closed for a month or more for repairs following a fire over the weekend, a fire department spokeswoman reported Tuesday.

The blaze, which started in a dish being prepared by the cooking staff Saturday, spread to a plenum and duct, and melted a device that activates the automatic fire extinguishing system, spokeswoman Barbara Cimino said in a statement. The staff couldn't manually activate the system, and the flames spread vertically and up the exhaust ducting system.

Cimino said insurance and fire protection company representatives are planning to conduct an engineering analysis to determine why the automatic fire extinguishing system failed to function and operate as designed. Maintenance records show the system and duct piping were serviced within the required time frames, she said.

Zibibbo — which was named one of the top 20 best American restaurants by readers of Gourmet magazine, according to the restaurant's Web site — is looking for ways to continue operating during the repairs, Cimino reported.

Calls to the restaurant Tuesday were answered by a recorded message.
