Kitchen fire burns through roof of N. Glenstone Shoney's

Springfield firefighters battled an apparent grease fire this morning at the Shoney's restaurant on North Glenstone near the Interstate 44 exit.

A grease fire broke out in the kitchen about 11:30 a.m. as cooks were preparing hamburgers on a boiler, according to owner Mike Cotter of Nixa.

At first, employees were able to extinguish the fire in the boiler, but it got up in the ventilation duck and got out of control, said David Scheiderer, battalion chief for the Springfield Fire Department.

"The fire expanded beyond their capacity," Scheiderer told reporters.

Scheiderer said the fire caused flames to shoot out of the roof through an attic vent.

Restaurant staff were able to safely evacuate patrons and no one was reported injured, Scheiderer said.

Firefighters had to cut a whole into the building's attic to fight the blaze, Scheiderer said.

Based on water damage from extinguishing the fire and the whole created in the roof, Scheiderer estimated it could take three to four weeks to repair the damage before the restaurant could be reopened.

It took approximately 40 minutes to put out the fire, Scheiderer said.

Cotter, who has owned the business since 2005, said he could not comment on how long it would take to reopen the restaurant "until we get inside."
