The Surtaj Indian restaurant on Stanley Street caught fire before 3.30pm. No one was injured.

It's believed it started in the kitchen and was well contained by five fire crews.

"There was no one inside," a nearby witness told The Courier-Mail.

"I think someone might have left a burner on."

Authorities are trying to confirm how the blaze started.

Last month, another Indian restaurant on Stanley St hit the headlines when a car ploughed into its dining area.

A small number of diners and staff were injured at the Blue Gulabi Indian.
