Food spill causes fire at restaurant
Food that spilled over from a pot in the kitchen of a Stillwater restaurant started a fire Tuesday night.
Firefighters could see flames shooting out of the roof of the restaurant and smoke blowing across the street as they headed to New China, 711 N. Main St., at about 9 p.m., said Capt. Terry Essary.
Essary said the kitchen had a fire extinguishing system that kicked in and put out the fire, and the smoke that firefighters saw was caused from grease that had built up in the vent system and was burning off.
Firefighters stayed on the scene for a couple of hours and removed part of the roof to make sure the fire was completely out, Essary said.
