Kitchen fire at O'Kelly's restaurant

Feb 2, 2010 - 9:34:21 PM

Restaurant patrons and workers got a taste of emergency conditions Tuesday night after complications from a grease fire kicked them out into the street.

Firefighters say they're not sure yet as to the cause, but the fire totaled the kitchen stove. The grease-based blaze worked its way up into the kitchen ductwork.

It happened just as the dinner hour at O'Kelly's restaurant was drawing to a close. Capt. Kevin Muffinbier of the Fargo FD said some restaurant workers helped put it out fairly quickly.

Firefighters say grease fires can be tricky in commercial settings and at home. If you don't have a fire extinguisher on hand, don't use water because it'll flare. Use baking soda or a pan lid instead.
