What Is Causing Those Black Stains on My Roof?
We've heard all of the theories. The best one is people thinking that the jet planes are dumping their jet fuel before they land in Newark. Roof cleaning has become an epidemic in New Jersey because of a bacteria that feeds on the limestone that has been introduced to the shingle within recent years. Limestone helps make a heavier and stronger shingle. But the staining causes quite the eye-sore.
Never Power Wash a Roof?
Using high pressure water does not kill the bacteria that causes the stain. Pressure washing a roof dislodges large amounts of roofing granules which shortens the life of a roof. These jobs are more approached like "pest control" and only a 100% kill ratio can insure a clean roof for any considerable length of time.
