MACON, MO. -- A kitchen fire forced everyone out of the China Garden restaurant on the north edge of Macon Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just before 3:30 p.m..

Macon Fire Chief Leroy Noble told KTVO flames were shooting from a vent on the roof when his crews got there.

The cause was a cooking fire on the stove that got out of control.

Noble says fire damage was contained mostly to the China Garden's kitchen appliances.

The entire restaurant received heavy smoke damage. Noble says the business will probably be out of commission for awhile because of all the cleanup that now needs to be done.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control.
