60 firefighters battle Naperville restaurant blaze

July 12, 2010
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE
A kitchen fire that evacuated a popular Naperville restaurant Sunday afternoon took more than sixty firefighters three hours to extinguish, and left the kitchen area uninhabitable.

A call at 12:02 p.m. from the Rosebud Restaurant summoned emergency officials to the location, where firefighters found a significant fire in the kitchen hood and duct system that had spread into the attic above the kitchen, according to a release from the Naperville Fire Department.

Twelve employees and about a dozen patrons were in the restaurant at the time and evacuated without incident, according to the release. No one was injured because of the blaze.

Mutual aid from more than a dozen fire departments and sixty total firefighters worked for more than three hours to extinguish the blaze, also putting out fires concealed within the roof layers, according to the release.

A witness on the scene said firefighters were seen punching holes in the roof above the kitchen of the restaurant at 48 W. Chicago Ave. and spraying water into the roof. Smoke was seen billowing out of the restaurant, forming a cloud that was visible over to Jefferson Street to the north.

Fresh companies were also brought in to provide support to firefighters tired by heat and humidity from the blaze, deemed a three-alarm fire, the release said.

An estimate of the damages the building sustained wasn’t available Sunday night, but a building inspector later deemed the kitchen area of the building uninhabitable and Naperville police and fire officials remain at the building to investigate the cause of the fire, the release said.

Police blocked off the location as curious shoppers downtown tried to get a glimpse of the blaze. Traffic was tied-up in the area as Chicago Avenue was closed.

A bystander at the scene who translated from a Spanish-speaking cook at the restaurant said staff tried to put out the fire but it got worse and the stove started on fire.

The restaurant's owner was on the scene but declined to comment to a Sun reporter.

Rosebud Italian Specialties and Pizzaria opened in 1993 in the heart of downtown Naperville. This spring, the restaurant went back to its roots with a new menu of Italian specialties.
