Downtown Italian restaurant damaged in fire

By Isadora Vail | Sunday, April 3, 2011, 07:47 PM

The Sagra Italian restaurant in downtown Austin was extensively damaged Sunday after a fire broke out in the attic, officials said.

Palmer Buck, a spokesman for the Austin Fire Department, said the fire began shortly before 5 p.m. while 20 people were eating inside. Buck said all the patrons and workers quickly evacuated the building at 1610 San Antonio Street. No one was injured.

Buck said the fire was extinguished by about 5:30 p.m. The restaurant suffered about $100,000 in damage and fire officials said the cause was accidental, due to an improper vent hood installation.
