I have not decided what I am going to do. He was hired with the understanding that he would not get holiday pay. He also understood that he would get the truck. I was contemplating selling it to him real cheap when it was paid off, but I don't think that I am going to do that now. So I am in a wait and see mode, until I have a clear cut idea of what I want to do. I don't want to go off half cocked.

Scott,
I think your giving more than your getting, If your unsure, then theres a reason!!!

Scott, I Know! I Know!

You should give me a company truck and give me holiday pay! I would be happy to actually work the 40 hours even! But what about a Christmas Bonus?

Hmm, he gets that, too. I guess I should have thrown that in.
So Nicole, If I gave you a company truck would you leave Ron's Humble Abode and come on the North side of town. Maybe with enough pressure he will give you a truck like Tims'
Scott

Now I am sure Nicole will take it. I hope that Tim is alright.

Scott

First of all, Ron where are the pictures of Tims truck?

Here is the current plan. I am probably going to install a GPS system on the two trucks that I have that perform this particular task. They run about $495 from earthtrak GPS tracking. Pretty reasonabl if you ask me.
I am also going to install, if I can find it a GPS that is going to direct them to each location that they have to service. This will cut down on training time and make my employees more cross utilizable. I am still looking in to this, but I think that I am going to be able to get that done for under $500 for both trucks. A steal I think.
The start time will then be tracked. I will make the start time when the hit the first stop, if they are leaving from their own house, or when they pick up the truck and are leaving the yard. The end time will be when they leave the yard at the end of the day. The do have to come to the yard at the end of every shift, even if I am not there. So, Does it sound like a plan that serves two purposes? It will keep the honest a little closer to on track, and will let me know how nuch time they are actually spending working.

Scott thanks for reminding me WHY i wanted to work for myself. Are you going to tell the driver it's there?
You going to mount a vid. cam inside next?
Cheating spouses look out. $500 bucks is a lot cheaper then a privet eye. ^You can run but you cant hide.
you can tell i dont like electronic survallence.
When it comes to people , if you cant trust them, you dont need or want them. I would love to find that thing in the truck on the first day and see the look on your face as you watched it look like the truck just drove into a lake as i threw it in.
It would be worth my last weeks pay.
It would be thursday july fouth.

Yes the drive rwill know that it is there, and is actually looking forward to it. There are a lot of benefits to him with the system as well. He always has the option of just quitting. The only problem is that if he does that he will not find a job that pays nearly what I pay him. As for whether or not it is right or wrong to have it in the truck. It is still my truck. I own it, I pay for maintenance on it, tires oil and fuel. It is designated for a certain job that the driver does for me. He is permitted to take it home. He can even use it for personal use. Sam thing with his Cell Phone and his pager. His time is mine during his work hours. I have the right and obligation to know what he is doing and where he is at any given time and whether he is performing the services for the contract I am getting paid to do. If he had been performing like he should have, and did the work that he was assigned as he should, then there would not have been a problem.
As for your feelings about it, not to worry, you won't have one in your truck:rolleyes:

Squirt I think you miss the point here, Scott as the owner has a right to know what his employee's are doing on company time, more so if he allows them to take a vehicle home.

You would be surprised at how many businesses use devices to track employees time running, stopping, speeding, idling and how many miles they drive daily.

It is perfectly legal to record all that, it is not spying, there is a difference and I do believe he has to inform the employee it is there, not sure but I think he does.

Say an employee refuses to drive a vehicle with that in it, what would the first thing that comes to your mind be, probably that he is doing things he should not be with the vehicle, right?

Scott is totally responsible for all that happens with his vehicles, if the guy goes shopping or to the races or hunting with it and Scott has not given him permission Scott still gets the law suit that follows, it is up to him to show signed papers saying the truck is not to be used for personal purposes. That tracking device is called a TOOL for the owner to be sure he gets what he pays for, namely an employee that is honest and does a full days work for a full days pay or is it night in this case.

Scott if all employees are required to return to the yard when done working I assume you have a time clock or some way to monitor that when your not there?

Jon

NO, there is no time clock, or anyhting else. Another reason I want the GPS. I caught the same employee calling me to tell me he was starting work, and so I went to the first stop and waited 55 minutes for him to show up. It is a ten minute drive from his house. That made me curious, so I waited for him (hiding at the yard, imagine doing that with a black crew cab super duty) at the end of his shift, and then saw what time he left. I drove the speed limit, Stopped to get something to drink. Saw Adam and stopped and talked to him for about five minutes, and then went on my way to his house. The total drive took me 30 minutes, with my stops. I had to wait for him for another 40 minutes to get there. I looked at his paper work at the end of the day and he put the time down that he got to his house as his stop time. That means 1.5 hours of travel time that wasn't necessary. Just another reason.

Hey Scott,
The more I read into this the more I'm starting to think that maybe you should get rid of the guy. Obviously you can't trust him and you have solid evidence to support your reasoning.

You have stated the facts about what this guy is doing that causes this mistrust. Think about this thought...If he is being dishonest about what he is doing and you know he is not telling the truth what about the things he may be doing then how do you know that he's not doing other negative things with your business such as maybe stealing or even abusing your equipment?

The point I'm trying to make is if he is causing this much concern and the trust is pretty much out the window then he's not worth the headache. This is where money is not everything thought comes in.

If I was in this situation with an employee then he/she has to shape up immiedetly or ship out. We have enough headaches and one like this...Who needs it.

He quit once and came back a much better employee. The reason that i ihim back was an act of desperation. I could not find anyone to do the work that he did and that would stick with it and show up. He also came begging because he decided that my steady work was a lot better than promised work from others. Currently, he has never missed ascheduled day of work, except for once when I told him to stay home. He was in a car accident on his way home from work the previous night and rolled his truck and was pretty beat up. He was black and blue, but still came to work the next night. He no longer has a take home vehicle, and that is fine because he has bought his second home that is an hour away, so now he has two homes, and the less expensive one is worth about $250k. He rents that and is living in the house that is worth more than my house. Something to be learned there.

When you start spending money needlessly to track an employee, if they are good, they will just find another way around it. If they are at that point that you have to wonder if you can trust them......Fire them! There are plenty more , and some better, where that one came from. I use to try giving in to employees and going by checking on them occasionally but I found I was spending to much needless time checking and getting walked on than what it was worth. If they appreciate the job and you, they will do it right without having to be checked on. Does anyone have to check on you? JMO

You know Nextel now offers a GPS tracking system "dots" with their phones. You can actually download a map and have real time tracking of where your crews are within the city - I think that it would be effective in many ways.

1> Of course, keeping track of employees and making sure they are where they are suppose to be.

2> If at sometime you could not get in touch with an employee - maybe bad reception in a certain area, you could go online and see where they are on a map - this would be handy for scheduling purposes.

There are numerous other pro's and con's to this.....

I would be weary of giving an employee a company truck in the first place. They guy would have to be employeed with us for quite some time to earn my trust on this one....Even Zach, my husbands brother that works for us wouldnt get one at this point and he has been with us for about a year now (Part Time). I think if an employee had a company vehicle and I caught them padding their hours - It would be immediate termination - no questions asked. If you have no respect for my company, I have no respect for you.
