Weekends only?

I'm thinking about starting part time at first. What will customers think when I tell them I can only work on their deck in the evenings and weekends? It dosen't seem professional to me. But I just can't risk jumping in full time. Have any of you run into this problem and if so how did you overcome it?

Thanks, Barry.

Many contractors start out part time. The key is to conduct yourself as if it is your full time job. Be professional and honest with your customers. People like to see people who are trying to better themselves and who are energetic enough to start a business. By being honest with them up front they will understand any scheduling conflicts. What I mean by conducting yourself like you are full time is to adhere to a standard. Get educated, do not low ball the prices, use signage, uniforms, company stationary, etc. Cherish the cutomers you get as if they were your last and soon you will have a repeat client list. After that who knows, maybe you'll be a full timer!

I am just finishing my first year and I am in the same situation. I am just upfront with people if they ask, if they do not ask I just schedule when I can. Just tell them you are booked and it will be the last job of the day. Did not loose any jobs as a result of not being able to schedule a time during the weekdays.

The only drawback to weekends is when you clean a deck in a townhouse community on Sunday morning early before 9AM. I have gotten quite a few jobs even though my bid was higher because I would be cleaning on weekdays. Just space out your jobs so that you do not encounter any noise problems in the area. Do singles early and if you have townhouses do them later in the day.

We have customers that almost beg us to work on weekends! They all want to be there when the work is done anyway. Thankfully I have one guy that likes working weekends. I also pay comissions on pick up jobs, we get a lot of those on weekends since people are home.
