Pwna Bbs

It appears that the PWNA will be locking thier BBS down to member only posting and only limited access to some forums for reading by non members.

What sort of outcome does the PWNA expect will come from this decision?
I for one do not believe that it will cause people to apply for membership.

I havent heard what their reasoning is, but I dont think its all that bad of an idea. Let them focus on what they should be doing...........running an organization...........and leave the bulletin boards to others.

The snow plowing organization SIMA (Snow and Ice Management Association) has a private, members only bbs. I never had a problem with that.

Devil's advocate role here, Mike - did you learn enough about the org and it's goings on with the private bbs to make you want to join? And, did their mission statement specifically refer to providing service non-members as well?

Celeste

If memory serves me correctly, PWNA had a Members Only BBS at one time.

Dave Olson

And there still is a members only section.......I think the problem is that the public forums have had the traffic and too many folks deviate from the purposes of the bbs - they are there to provide industry related information, right? The members only section is one step from in the grave with it's lack of use. I don't feel that non-members should be excluded from posting - that is just my opinion which carries LITTLE weight, but it's how I feel period. The self-regulating thing is all well and good if everyone would practice it. People don't talk to their clients or colleagues the way they type at one another - some of it is just rude and uncalled for and so much of that has been in the public forums on the PWNA bbs that it has given it a black eye. Changes need to be made in order for things to heal, however, I don't think that shutting down the non-members is necessary. You don't remove the eyeball when you get a black eye do you?

Celeste

PS, I am a member so I have no gain by speaking up for non-members. I do know that if I had not been able to be active prior to joining, I probably would not have joined.

New membership will drop, but I'm sure with a decision of this magnitude, they
(who ever that may be) determine that privacy, etc (or what ever reason) is more important than growth. A board is a valuable tool for marketing and increasing the PWNA membership. At least the members will know all about the PWNA> Speaking for myself, I've been reading a lot of post on the PWNA and have been thinking very seriously about joining. Up until recently, I have not been totally sold on joining. I was really leaning toward joining. Oh well, the PWNA boat has and will float without me.

A positive for this board and others: The non members will post somewhere - why not this board.

A new ad campaign for this board:

PWI - Membership Not Required, just the desire to learn & freedom to express your opinions.

Dave O. Your memory i believe is correct. I recall then talking about it years back.

Celeste, I would not have even heard of the org if it where not for BBS.

If PWNA was a larger org and had alot of money to market i would say no BBS. But they do not have the money.

Lets see how many posts they have and what the daily traffic goes down to. keep in mind when you view the log it will not be correct. it will still show people trying to get on.

I think in time things will change from the drastic state they are in today. This is pre-convention time so concentration is there at present. I have to have faith in what the BoD is doing - it's not in their best interest to kill the organization so there must be another plan in motion...some things just take time and with the direction that the bbs was going in, stopping the fires was probably easier than fighting them every day.

I would not have found them either if not for the bbs and I've pointed that out in multiple places. But standing back, the BoD & org were under so much fire on the bbs, keeping it open was not productive to the organization as a whole.

I'm not supporting or condemning the decision anymore at this point - we will all still post elsewhere and maybe now, those who were spending stupid numbers of hours defending/insulting/making excuses will now have the time to do what they need to be doing.

Dan F you should always include the link. How willother find it. Remember you can do that here. you cant on PWN. Opps I mean Matt I thought i was talking with Dan F. I'm sorry Matt, i just see you over there so much i got you guys mixed up. LOL

Ron

Can you explain how I can unsubcribe to the PWNA. I keep getting emails from them stating that someone has replied to a thread, as you know as a non member, when I hit the link - NO ACCESS. So I hit the unsubscribe link and didn't see what I was looking for. I'm looking for a way to stop the emails. Can you assist?

TIM, Write them a stern letter asking them to turn off your controls.

make it to mark pitzer admin. you could write it to pete as well.

then if that doesnt work write the associate members telling them how anoying it is getting e-mails from someone that doesnt want your umput any longer.

Tim, you can do nothing they will need to do it.

Thanks Ron

Do you have a email address. I see no sense in getting emails from them, if I can't use the board that the email links lead me too. I'll miss reading some of the post on that board - a lot of experience and knowledge, but I along with others will find it somewhere else - like here. If not, one thing for sure in free enterprise, somebody else will provide it through another board or organization. You can only be original and the only game in town for a while - others will come. Thanks so much.

Tim -
Go into your User CP on the BBS of your choice. Unsubscribe to all the threads, and I think you can also elect in the User CP to not receive emails from the Admin.
Hope this helps.
Beth

Thanks Beth

I'll do it. Appreciate it. I was hoping to meet you someday - I figure my only chance would be at a PWNA convention - not anymore. Maybe our paths will cross someday - I really have enjoyed seeing your business, board, etc grow - You are a go-getter, thats for sure.

Thanks for the info. You were correct - I had the options of stopping all communication and emails - I hate not being associated with the PWNA and reading/posting on the board, but at least my email's inbox will decrease on a daily basis.

I'm probably one of the ones that they wanted to get rid of. haha
So far, the plan is working.

Dave

I believe you are right about the PWNA board being members only in the past. You will find (or in your case, already know) that business runs in a circle. In general, we don't learn from the past. We tend (over time) to go back to what we change from and eventually change back - over & over.

Example: Mom & Pop stores - then we go to grocery and department stores - then we go to Wal-Mart, etc - then we go the the Super Stores (get everything in one place) - only to realize that the consumer misses the personal touch and customer service that the old mom & pop stores or smaller grocery stores use to provide. All of sudden, people don't like that its hard to find parking, long lines, store is so big that they can't find what they need, employees that don't have a clue where stuff is or if they have it. Just food for thought.

Ha ha, very funny motherfooker! I never realized what a rivalry you guys had going on until recently. Maybe I will start posting over there some more just to piss you off :p

The links to those boards wont do anyone any good. They are completely private and you need a password to access anything on the boards.
