phone book ads

very nice ads,how much does your ads cost you?

what kind of response rate do you see,and with what company?

with bellsouht 1/4 page full color is 560 a month

talking phone book gave me a one time deal for a marketing researh project their doing which is the upper ad, its a cheaters full page and costs me 315 month but also includes a coupon and a business card size ad in color under gutter cleaning.

they defantly pat for their selves but get no where near the responce i get from small cheap ads in the newspaper

that is quite an advertising budget but i assume those ads keep you busy fulltime.
i advertised two companies in the yellow book this year and was somewhat dissapointed, limited calls with a lot of tire kickers.
although the economy was terrible this past year so that may have had something to do with it.

what is your approach to getting the jobs?

do you quote set pricing over the phone,or do you find more success in showing up and closing the sale in person?

the reason i ask is i have had limited success in closing,i am too much an up front and honest person and i am learning there is a lot of (tricks of the trade) to the closing yellow page sales area.

i am learning to close sales by trial and error but i havent found the sure fire system to maximize closing.

ps how many other companies beside yourself are listed in the same books?

well being open and honest is the first step so you have that down. I never give prices over the phone becasuse it could be another cotractor checking up on your prices.

I find that this business is alot like the car business, you have to sell yourself as well as what you offer.

For example if i just leave an estimate i only get about 40% of those jobs, but if i go and meet them to do an estimate 90%.

Now that is quite a differance.

There are about 50 other contractors in these phone books with me but only about 5 with large ads and only about 15 with display ads of any kind.

I didn't get very good turnover from the book eigther so i'm trying it 1 more year then dropping it if it does not return 5 times my invested $$. Bad advertising choices i;m learning can really put a hurt on the bottom line.

Boy, that is big bucks for adds.... I just ran a one liner, and I did not run one for exhaust hoods, I go and meet these people personaly... One guy runs adds with deals or pics and he also runs the same add for exhaust cleaning and found out he beat me to the punch today, maybe I made the mistake!!!! But what I have found out that people looking in the phone book are looking for deals not quality.... I am sure Dave Olson would disagree, for the work he does... But one knows unless you try!!!!
