When looking at the video I think Jim is addressing the content of the bleach and whether it is being rinsed off? There is no bigger bleach head than Jim, just look at his clothes because he doesn't own anything that doesn't have bleach stains. I think the bigger issue we are all facing is what is the correct range of bleach dilution to use on wood which is tough to nail down. We should be using the minimum amount to get the job done which does take some experience. We all are seeing people out there thinking bleach is magic and that if you make it heavy it will give instant results. A little while back there was a guy spraying 100% bleach (not sure if it was household or 12.5) in a video but we can all agree that is just wrong. On the other side of this we have the people who say "never use chlorine bleach" like it is the devil's potion. Those people have never cleaned 10-15 year old cedar shakes with the results I get, bottom line. Here is my take on the chemical argument, there is no written rule on jobs because jobs are different. Using the one chem this time on one job may require a different chem next time on a job that is similar. For instance, concrete cleaning sometimes requires water only, sometimes degreasers, and sometimes bleach. Knowing how to use the different products in the right dilution and in the safest way is the best way. I know that chlorine bleach is an acceptable sanitizer in food preparation. I know that they use chlorine bleach to disinfect and clean my water well that we drink out of. I know that there is sodium hydroxide in my toothpaste. It is all how the chemicals are used. Regarding wood though it is important when restoring wood that you pre-wet the wood first and when finished with chems you should rinse thoroughly.
I do think that looking at a lot of videos that "shock and awe" is a key ingredient in the making of these videos. You really can not watch a short clip and know how to perform wood restoration. It would take a lot of videos and a lot more time, maybe a week's worth for all that we run into. In my opinion this should be taken into consideration when we watch them.
