Fellas,

Finally got my superduty about a month ago, love it!! I was lucky enough to find something used that was like i wanted.

'01 Crew cab/short bed F250
4x4
XLT, all options but leather
27K miles
new tires, step up bars, gooseneck setup
PSD

I paid 27K for it, I thought it was a pretty decent deal. I found some other deals that were potentially better, but i wanted silver. Only found 2 trucks that i wanted, one in Memphis and one in Wisconsin. I got the one in Memphis.

Now, after buying this i realized i know nothing about maintenance on a Diesel. Do any of you guys recall how many quarts of oil it takes?? Are you using the Rotella 15W40?? anyone have chips put in??

Jon,
The oil change takes 15 quarts. You must precharge the filter before reinstalling. It hold a half gallon. You can buy the Ford FL1595 filter at WALMART for $9.95. If they have AUTOZONES there you can get the same filter for $8.95.

I have used the Shell oil since purchasing my 2000 F-250 PSD 4x4 cc Lariat new. Fuel economy around town 13.0 highway running 69-70 is 17.4-18.0

You can go to this website for all the info you can ever want.
www.dieseltruck.com.

Jon,
Sorry website changed. Use this link instead www.TheDieselStop.com

Good price on truck! Do some research before installing chips ect.
I have read of warranties being denied for some as a result.

Hey did you know Ford is introducing a new diesel engine? It is a 6.0 liter 325hp 560 ft pounds of torque. Also a new heavier 5.0 4 speed auto trans. Should be new trucks on lots as we speak.

thanks guys!! Ya, i knew about the new motor, but i'll let others test it for the first couple years to see if it can hang. That must be one big oil filter if it hold 1/2 gal. of oil!! I'll find out in the morning, thanks again,

Jon, Start on the synthetic oil as soon as posible. Use Amesoil or Mobil1 15w50. Use wix filters if you can find them, they are the best. I use mobil1 and have over 240K miles on mine. I change filter and add top off oil at 7500 and total change and filter at 15000. This is actually less costly than using Rotella and changing every 5000. Use a wix fuel filter also . Go see all those websites , there is lots of info and tips.

If John changes his oil as you recommend he would void his engine warranty. To keep it in force you must change every 5K at least thats what my manual and dealer say.
The exception to this would be if you have an oil analysis ran each time. I hear that runs about $20.00 a pop.

oil changes

B, I dont know about the warranty issue with Ford, but I would change to synthetic anyway. I got that info straight from Amsoil and they recommended that interval. I dont know if it will void or not. I guess cross that bridge when you get to it. Anyway do the synthetic thing. The carbon doesnt bond to synthetic oil like it does to petroleum based, and it filters out easier. And wont gum up your engine. A much cleaner engine. FYI I run syn in all my equipment, P/W, Boat, Mowers, Weedeater, Cars, Trucks, if I had a M/C Id put it in that too. LOL

Michael T,
No doubt that synthetic has a lot of advantages. I just want to make sure I don't have any issues with the warranty. I change my oil every 3,500 miles.

Recommended interval for oil changes on the diesel is 3000 miles.
The Napa gold filter is a wix filter. The silver filter is a filter made by the same people as Autozone. The house Carquest brand is also a Wix filter.

I would go to Syntheitcs, too. It iwll increase your fuel mileage and make your engine happier. I am contemplating the change myself, except I hate to change my own oil.
www.thedieselstop.com is dedicated to the FOrd Powerstroke trucks and is free. There is a lot of information on there, and has more than 20,000 members on it. IT is a really good site.

Amsoil,

Used to use it, is over rated and costly compared to other name brands. Also another good oil is Chevron Delo.

Now about the wix filter, never heard of it, care to explain?

Air filter also should be replaced often, or go to a K & N or better yet find an open round one.

The more air intake the more power but to truly improve you would need to go with 4 inch exhuast pipes from the waste gate back.

Milage, what are you guys getting both towing and not towing?

Mine got 15 the first two fill ups.
Then down to 13.5
Now 12.7

Does not matter if I tow or not, I keep very good records so can document the above. Truck in dealership now for knocking noise. First thought it was rear end, then tranny or drive line. All ruled out, they think it is the wastegate hitting the cab.

Looked into those chips, not worth the cost since all it is going to do is give you a little more horsepower and torque plus make the tranny shift harder or faster. No improvement on milage.

New to the forum but thought I would throw my .02 cents in. I have worked at a Ford Dealership for the past 9 years and if you do not follow the maintenance schedule it will void the warranty, Ford changed the wording in the maintancne book for "reccomended service" to "Required Service" and that vehicle has A 5yr/100,000 on the engine (all internaly lubricated parts) after the 3/36 though you do pick up a $200 deductable. If you don't already know e-mail me the VIN # and I can look up the Warranty Start date, any open recalls, and warranty service history. If you bought it at A dealer they probably told you this but if you bought it from an individual I would be happy to help you out

i read the following on another site and was wondering if anyone else had heard of this.

The truck is a 94 3/4 ton Ford turbo diesel 4x4 I have had it about 3 years, runs great and is very clean. I took it to St. Louis to Mclain Performance Diesel and got a performance upgrade just to get more fuel milage and pulling power out of it. I also pull a horse trailer that ways 10,000 lbs and it pulls decent until I get to alot of hills so the upgrade was a 5 inch exaust, injecter tune up and upgrade in the injecter pump with a k&n filter I went from no load of 18 mi to the gallon to 26 mi to the gallon and with a load I went from 14 mi to 18 mi and it pulls so much better.

I wasnt sure how long I would have to keep it so the 1000 dollars for the upgrade was going to be a good investmant and pay for itself the first year in fuel savings -------

I have just bought a 2000 f350 sd with a ps diesel and thought about this. any and all comments welcomed

Jon,

I am pretty sure the best for those fords with the international in it is, Valvoline All-fleet. You must put an additive in with the antifreeze also that is available at your Ford Dealership. Change your fuel filter which is very easy to do, every 15,000 miles.

The turbo sometimes comes loose on some of those but other than that, they are great trucks.

i purchased a 2002 F350 4x4 lariat super cab dually PS april 2002. 22000 miles later i get 16-17 mpg around town and 21-22 long highway driving at 60-65.

i have been a believer of synthetics for 20+ years. once i put a quart of AmsOil and a quart of Vavoline (both same weight), in my freezer for 24 hours and then poured. try it, it'll make a believer out of you too. i currently use Mobile One 0-30w and have been since 5000 miles. in a few months i plan to totally convert to AmsOil oils and fluids, expensive but worth it i think. it also keeps your engine cooler, rpms's increase slightly and internal parts exceptionally clean (if used early in life before petroleum based oils build up).

i would say be very carefull with the K&N's they are very porous and do let in more air in but does not filter as well. dirt is a killer.

jon, i subscribe to the power stroke registery mag. although it is very expensive and find the articles very appealing.

thinking of getting a 4-6 inch lift kit, chrome double roll bar, winch and chrome bar for the front. just ordered a hands-free nextel self install system. hope to get it in next week. hope the quality is ok.

i'm going to check out all the sites everyone has mentioned.

gonna have some fun.

Roy,

give us an update on that hands free system when you get it up and running..............I need one of those.

Nextel is great Mike. Soon it will be nationwide direct connect. We can all beep each other once in a while.

I see that differently...........I think I'll be keeping my nextel number to myself..............i get enough interuptions already. :)

mike,

i'll be sure to let everyone know how it works for me. i rarely, rarely will talk on the phone as i have it now. hope this will make things better.
