leaking pump

The pump was leaking water under the head so I took the head off and inspected the plungers and packings. Two packings had cracks in them and two plungers had cracks as well. $150 later, I have two new plungers and a new set of packings, but it still leaks under the head. The pressure is where it needs to be but the leak is driving me nuts. Orings looked great. One thing I have noticed is the packings dont fit really snug in the head. Any ideas?

Sounds like the ports have been worn. It could also be the orings on the piston shaft or a cracked head. Did you try changing out the brass when you did the rebuild? If so it looks like it is time for a new pump.

Did you use new copper washers and o rings on the bolt when you put the new pistons on? There may be a leak there, or you may have cracked your new piston because the spent washer had no "crushability". Another place to check during a rebuild is the face of the crankcase where the seal retainers rest. If the retainer has beaten a groove in the front of the crankcase, it basically falls out of the head far enough to expose the o ring.

Thats what I was thinking actually. Some pumps I've rebuilt I couldnt get the brass out of the head but in this case, it seems to have quite a little slack. Nevertheless, a couple seals in the plunger bolts, the leak is gone. I will be needing another pump soon though, the spare pump on the shelf is in quite a few pieces.

probably, thats what I get for saving $4,000 by buying a used skid though... The skid itself is a Rahsco 12 volt with a Kohler 18hp which is a serious upgrade from the vanguard imho. Rahsco skids are built extremely well. I'm happy with the purchase even though the pump needed a few parts.

Nothing wrong with that.
