hoods onboard Navy ship

Hi guys,

I have to do the maint on the hoods onboard an aircraft carrier. I am starting my own powerwashing biz but I am not getting into hoods. We are supposed to wipe the hood down daily to avoid grease build up but the MRC doesnt talk about the duct or fan inside the duct. would it be better to install a electric hot water pressure washer? I am just looking for ways to do the job better and make for a safer enviroment for my ship. We have the gaylord hoods onboard and they have a hot water/detergent washdown system but you close the vent dampner when you use it shuldnt the exaust be cleaned as well?

You are simply being used as a janitorial service, not as an Exhaust Cleaner. All US Navy ships have Gaylord Water Wash units. They are complex and you could find problems in short time. The Navy has on board staff that clean those units – while at sea and so on. Gaylord has service agents that have the knowledge to work on the control systems (Gaylord). Just wipe them down and don’t venture out. Good Luck :)

thanks for the help but I am the onboard staff lol. I run the maint dept and our galleys are just coming back online so there is no one onboard that has done the maint on these units before. it sounds to me like I need to contact Gaylord and get a rep out here to walk us thru the maint on this thing. I just noticed that there was nothing about cleaning the exaust vents they are not installed yet either so I dont know exactly what I am going to have to work with. They are will to be up and working in a short period of time. When I was reviewing the MRC it looked like the exaust vent was being ignored and from what I have read on here it threw a flag up with me.

Are you in the Navy ? I will have a Gaylord CSA call you if you Email me you phone number and the name of the ship.

I used to laugh at Gaylord Hoods... We saw one at a Burger King and the l-o-r-d had came off .. My buddy said look at that hood .. Without the Lord its Gay.. Hahahaha..

So are you just cleaning that hood or do you want to get in the business and clean all ship hoods and hoods on land as well..

We used to clean a couple of hoods on the Waterways experiment station in Vicksburg on the Mississippi Bardge... But we lost it because they were required to hire a minority owned business ( DISCRIMINATION)

I just clean the hoods here on my ship. I am active duty I got ahold of the co and got things straight. I am also writing a new Preventive maintance procedure for the duct work that will be applied navy wide becuse they were being ignored just as I suspected.

What did the company say when they contacted you? All US Naval ships have Gaylord Hoods and within the Gaylord manuals you should find cleaning requirments and so on. Your best option is to work with the company that has the Gaylord Naval Contract.

Some years back the US Navy cleaned the flues of the exhaust system by putting diesel down the vertical and set the system on a control fire and burned the grease out.
