Honda GX390

I don't understand CC and HP. A Honda GX690 has what? 21 HP? A 650 CC V twin sport bike like a Suzuki SV650S has 74 HP. Smaller displacement, 3.5x more horsepower. I know pressure washers and motorcycles are two totally different things, so there has got to be some explanation for that. I guess it's like Russ said, it depends on how you're using the engine

I don't think the Lifan is really a 15 HP.

Having both, to be honest I can't tell the difference. However, the Lifan seems to use more fuel.

I guess engine makers can claim whatever they want as to HP output, but at the risk of getting sued if the claim is exaggerated.

As I recall Honda got sued a few years back over the claimed output of their mower engines. So maybe now they're being conservative in their power claims.

Ford once had a huge suit over the claimed HP for the Mustang GT. So now they have HP certified by the SAE. So does GM, Chrysler and Mercedes.

Among small industrial engine makers I believe Kawasaki is the only mfg that has the SAE certify the HP of the engines they build. Could also be others though.

On its website Honda doesn't claim HP output for their motorcycles, just gives the CCs.

Industrial engine = long stroke = less HP but more torque

Motorcycle engine = short stroke = higher revs, more HP, but less torque

So the Predator is a Lifan, but the lifan 420 cc is called a 15 hp. and the 420cc Predator is rated 13 hp. Are they different in some way? I just found out Harbor Freight is opening a new store 1.6 miles from me. So now I am interested in the predator. The only thing I have question about is the mounting face:
Mounting pattern195.5mm L x 86.0mm W - 103.0mm W (7.7" L x 3.4" W - 4.1" W

will a 4040ez mount to this?

Absolutely! No problem at all.

Ralph, Lifan makes both a 13 HP and a 15 HP. Don't know what's different between them. Assuming same block/displacement, 15 HP might have bigger carb jets, higher compression - something like that. I don't think you can get the 13 HP with an alternator.

will a 4040ez mount to this?

That's one for Russ, Jerry, Paul, etc.

How much is the 13 HP Predator at Harbor Freight?

$349 which is ridiculously low compared to a honda. I did some research and the reviews are mixed. Most say they are very good but some say the assembly is shoddy. I don't know with a 4040ez, I can get another machine out of it I can use it as a spare, and tie two together until I buy a hot water unit. Whats the alternator? is that the electric start? Because it comes with it. Or is that the charging system?

alternator is what charges the battery while the machines running.
That's why your car battery will die if you leave the lights on but you can leave em on as long as you want so long as the engine is running

So if the electric start engine does't have an alternator, then what do you have to charge the battery yourself everyday?

No, engine will charge it. But a minimum 18 Amp alternator is needed if you're going to use the engine to also power a 12V burner.

When Japanese cars first came to the U.S. they were junk.

When Kia and Hyundai came here they were total junk.

Lots of well made stuff is coming out of China (iPad, iPhone, Vizio TVs, etc). Cars will be next.

Keep your eye on Chonda...er...Lifan! BTW, they also build cars.

Ted, what size fuel tank does yours have?
The Predator from HF says it has a 1 gallon gas tank. Can you concur?

Just looking at all the specs. a gx390 has the same torque as a lifan 15 hp 420 @18.5 ft-lbs. The predator 13 hp is 17 ft-lbs of torque. a 20.3 hp honda has 35 ft-lbs, and a 22 hp lifan has 29 ft-lbs and the price is within $200 of each other. isn't torque the thing that matters when it comes to pressure washers ? So maybe the engines are that cheap for a reason. I guess the 15 hp is the most economical one out of the bunch.

Chad, my Lifan holds 1.8 gallons. GX390 = 1.6.

Even though the tanks look alike, the Lifan by measurement is slightly larger.

So if the Predator is a Lifan, the tank has been cheapened. Irrespective of whatever the Predator really is, I'd pass on a 1 gallon tank for an engine that size. It'd be a real PITA.
