There has been some drama over systems with closed proprietary filters over refillable cartridges as of late. But does it matter and why would someone make a sealed filter?
To answer the last question first - it's what was asked for. Many cleaners didn't want to take time to buy and store loose carbon or DI media and then refill their own cartridges. They wanted plug and go. So 2 manufacturers on the market designed systems for those cleaners with low entry level prices. Now a guy could get into pure water with a portable RO/DI setup for around $1500.
The first part of the question now comes into play as some have targeted one manufacturer as trying to take advantage of cleaners because of the cost of those filters. But does that matter? Not really. Any good business person knows that with low initial costs often the long term costs will be higher. It would be like buying a car off Craigslist and then expecting it to perform and be as cheap to maintain as a new car. Not very sensible.
So why do some make it a big deal? You have to ask what their motives are, and why they only complain about one of those manufacturers and not the other. Could it be vested interest rather than concern for the cleaner?
