Fall protection

Fall protection is a big issue with me. I have my stories like everyone else and the old saying of "ain't scared but ain't stupid" probably applies.

Here in the Raleigh area we have a ton of homes with some serious piches. 10/12, 12/12......You cannot reach them from the ground with a pitch witch or similar so you just have to get up there......

What kind of fall protection do you use? I have seen some systems with several types of anchors and grab ropes etc...but I am wondering how to install them as a temporary measure. I have heard guys that say just screw the anchors in right through the shingles and when you are done, remove and put some tar in the holes......hmmmmm....I have seen pics where the shingles are pulled up to expose the wood or talr paper and then the anchors are screwed in.........When you remove the anchor, you basically put the shingle back in place and it is back to normal.

Some guys just grow a set a get up there and do it....again, "ain't scared but ain't stupid".

Any ideas or pics would be appreciated.

We use harnesses, lanyards and rope to tie off when needed. I'm personally not comfortable driving nails into someone's roof. Causing a leak can be very expensive.

If the roof isn't walkable, we spray from the ground or a ladder from the roof's edge with a gas-powered pump, rather than a ShurFlo setup. Most of the walkable roofs are done with ShurFlo pumps.

This is what we do..

Hey Russ,

We use the CDS-John Blue diaphragm pumps. We have 3 of them that we use on the larger commercial jobs and occasionally on a residential job or two. They're operated off of 1/2' hose rather than 3/8' and we use the same pvc wand that we always have, but we plumb it for the extra flow at the tip and it has a 3/8' QC rather than a 1/4'. Ours are set up to deliver just under 4 gpm, which saves a lot of time and other issues when dealing with roofs that are 3 stories or higher.

Don
