Any Members belong to the Better Business Bureau?
And did it help your business anyway?

We belong, and I believe it actually has helped win a few contracts.
They even send you a report on a regular basis letting you know how many people called and checked on you specifically versus how many checked on your type of busuiness in general.

I have had our local BBB call and want me to send them money. Our local BBB is located in Portlnd, 300 miles away. After talking to them, I got the impression thay are out to make money. If someone calls asking for a reference, they are givne the names of the pressure washers belonging to the BBB. No investigation as to qualifications, experience, lenght of time in business, licensing, insuraance coverage, just send a check. They will offer to arbitrate in case of dispute. I see no benefit in joining the BBB.

Douglas, The person you spoke with was not doing their job. When I joined they ask all of those questions and one requirement was that you have been in business at least a year. I personally know the CEO of the Middle Tennessee BBB and if you like I can find out where they failed you. Our website is linked with the BBB site and it lets customers see all of the information about our company. That office was like many accross the country. There are people that don't care for the job they are in. I urge you to call back and speak with the person in charge. Can't judge the barrel by one bad apple.

Douglas,

I get several calls a year from the BBB wanting me to join. I just received such a call last week and talk with them for a good while. When the subject came up about handling complaints and arbitration, the conversation got real interesting.

The point I tried to make to them was that they have no authority within the state to handle complaints or to go into arbitration where a contractor is concerned. There is a State Contractors Board to handle these matters. Take for example that a home owner didn’t like the job I did and he called the BBB to file a complaint. At this point I would have to answer that complaint and spend a lot of time defending myself. If the home owner didn’t like the final out come, all he would have to do is file another complaint with the contractors board and I would have to go through the whole process again. To me, that would be a waste of time for everybody. As far as arbitration goes, I have just recently received a letter from the contractors board stating that we can no longer use arbitration to settle disputes, we now must go through the contractors board. This letter stated that if we have an arbitration clause written into our contract we are to remove it or face a $1500.00 fine.

If the consumer wants information on a contractor, all they have to do is call or go on line to the Oregon State Contractors Board. You can find out more about a contractor here than you can about a doctor, a lot easier too.

I believe that the BBB has it’s place, but not when you are working in a government regulated business like we are. As far as I’m concerned at this point, belonging to the BBB would only be a status symbol, a very expensive status symbol.

Steven, You are working in a state that does not have a State contractors Board so you are not regulated by a state agency. For you to belong to the BBB would be a good deal, you can use and also get the benefits that your paying for.
