Does anyone here know of Bitcoins? I read about them last night. Its an alternative form of currency called a crypto-currency. Basically a digital currency. I guess people are really starting to use them and its getting bigger everyday. Right now 1 bitcoin is worth $112 dollars http://data.cnbc.com/quotes/MTGOXUSD

So Im thinking 1.4 bitcoins for a driveway cleaning!! haha

Might start to accept them. You can accept them by using a bitcoin merchant like this one:
https://bitpay.com/

They have been around a while. Not so easy to spend offline :)
There is a debate over if it is legal to produce a non federal backed currency. The law may not protect you against fraud with this type of currency.

BitCoin is more valuable than FRNs - which are considered to be 'worth less'. By the way, the FRN is not backed by anything either.

Yeah but can you fill up your truck with it at the gas station or buy groceries with it at WalMart ? Can you deposit it in your bank account ? Can you pay bills with it ? How do you convert it to spendable dough.
Just asking because I don't think many accept it now .

Pat, you can turn it into cash instantly through a merchant account.

This is just one way to turn it into cash, but its very easy to put it directly into your bank account.

I worked in tech support at a cable company before my current job and we actually had a bitcoin maniac working for us. Certain websites, individuals online and even some shops out in cali are starting to pick up on using bitcoins now. Its risky to get into no doubt but recently there was a "bubble" that made a few people quite a bit of money and they were discussing adding it to the stock exchange. The winkledorf (sp) twins (guys who tried to sue the FB creator for money) are a big part of that will millions of dollars into bit coins. They are gaining popularity online and with tech folk but I highly doubt that it would ever be cleared for everyday use.

This is a very interesting subject for those that do not understand how a monetary system works or at least how it should work.

The US monetary system is a freight train that has already derailed... most people just don't care and most of the rest are just not bright enough to understand what is going on.

Go back to sleep sheeple, nothing to see here.

I have friends whose computers are up all night mining bitcoins (ie firms are borrowing their computing power and paying out in bitcoins). They say after upgrading their graphics cards and paying for the extra electricity they are profiting a couple hundred bucks worth of bitcoins per month by doing nothing. Yes some of these nerds have houses and decks that need cleaned and might love to hire a contractor that accepts bitcoins.

I tried looking into this today. My freaking head hurts! I am not the most intelligent person nor am I the dumbest but if you ask me bit coin is retarded! Where does this coin come from? The stuff I read and watched stated you provide something and someone gives you a coin for it. My question is where did that coin come from? In fact where did the first coin come from? How many coins are there? How is a "value" put on them when they can be created? How is this any different than any other currency? To me it seems like BS!

Think of it like the old gold miners. The concept is almost the exact same except you use computers (or specially built equipment) to digitally mine for coins, which are actually algorithms that need to be solved. You solve an algorithm you get a coin. From what I've read and viewed online, nearly a third of the coins were already claimed before the system was introduced to the public.

The principal is similiar to the 'Gold Standard', you can never have more money than that which can be backed by gold. We are no longer on a Gold Standard (thank Dick [head] Nixon for that... and yes, you were a criminal - wished I had know that when I was in Yorba Linda, I would have pissed on your grave).
