I got a phone call last week to clean a parking lot in downtown Kansas City, MO and the property manager said he needed it done on the weekend "no problem" I head down there and start washing BY MYSELF and soon realized I had made a mistake. I had three homeless people come up asking for money. 1 said he was a retired Vietnam War vet and that I should respect him seeing that he is my elder. The other one said he was collecting "donations" for the KC Chiefs make a wish foundation I told both of them I was busy and they left when they saw I wasn't going to help them.
The third guy flat out scared me! He said he was the pastor of a local church and was taking his choir to sing and the church van got a flat and he needed money to buy a can of fix a flat. This guy could not stand still to save his life and he kept getting closer and closer to me. To top it off he kept reaching in the pockets of his coat like he had a weapon or maybe I was just paranoid. This whole time I'm kicking myself because my phone is 150' away in my truck charging! So I gave the guy ten bucks and he walked away. Looking back now I feel like a very lucky guy!
So what does everyone else do in these cases? I know the obvious thing is to take someone along but what if that's not an option?
