Fire started in kitchen

WOODSTOCK-- Afire at the Bamboo restaurant Tuesday has prompted Woodstock fire officials to remind people to always stay in the kitchen while cooking.

Lisa Woods, public education co-ordinator for the Woodstock Fire Department, said the cause of the rooftop fire was unattended cooking that ignited the oil and spread to the grease in the duct-work.
The damage to the Norwich Avenue Chinese restaurant is estimated at $15,000.

"Although this was a commercial setting, the Woodstock fire department reminds cooking is the leading cause of home fires in Canada," Woods said.

She said the department is also encouraging restaurants to regularly clean and maintain their commercial exhaust and hood systems.

The fire broke out shortly after 4 p.m. -- the second of the day in the Woodstock area. Firefighters quickly quelled the fire and cleared the scene just before 7 p.m.

Woods said there was only minimal smoke damage to the adjacent businesses.

Natasha Whitton, who was working next door at Sebastian's Noodle Factory, said they didn't even know there was afire.

"Customers were coming in telling us the roof was on fire," Whitton said.

She said it wasn't until their staff was evacuated that the restaurant started to fill with smoke.
