Man stuck in restaurant flue

Homeless Man Stuck in Vent at Laurel Restaurant

A homeless man was found this morning stuck inside an air vent at Jerry's Subs and Pizza.

A homeless man was sent to the hospital this morning after being stuck inside a ventilation duct at Jerry's Subs and Pizza for up to eight hours, according to Prince George's County Police.

The incident happened along the 9700 block of Fort Meade Road. According to a Fire/EMS press release, the man somehow became lodged in the vent at the restaurant after it closed Wednesday evening and remained there until this morning when the owner of the store discovered him.

The male, described to be about 30 years old, attempted to gain entry into the restaurant entering by way of a roof hatch, according to Fire/EMS. As he made his way down the duct for the cooking ventilation system, he became stuck at the bottom at the stove hood.

His feet were left dangling above the stove, where he stayed for up to eight hours, according to Fire/EMS.

By the time Fire/EMS arrived on the scene, the man began complaining of trouble breathing. Paramedics provided an oxygen mask through the same shaft he used to gain entry on the roof, according to Mark Brady, Fire/EMS spokesman.

Paramedics were not able to easily free the man. And in order to prevent additional injuries, the Laurel firefighters called the Fire/EMS Department's Technical Rescue Services for assistance. Crews from the TRS cut away a portion of the cooking ventilation and released the man from his position after 40 minutes. The man was sent to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly for further evaluation.

County police said the man will likely face a burglary charge once he is released from the hospital. Police said nothing was taken from the store and could only guess why he decided to go in through the vent system.

“He may have been looking for a place to get away from the cold,” said Cpl. Henry Tippet, a police spokesman.

Police have not released the man's name.
