Fire in duct work closes Freehold Township restaurant
February 16, 2010

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A fire this afternoon in the duct work of the Panda House restaurant in a shopping center at Routes 9 and 79 forced the evacuation of adjoining businesses and the closing of the eatery.

The East Freehold Fire Company was returning from an earlier alarm when members noticed the smoke coming from the Panda House shortly after 3:30 p.m.

"People were inside eating, they had no idea" there was a fire, said Nick Palumbo, East Freehold fire chief.

The fire company got about dozen people, including restaurant workers, out of the Panda House and evacuated the other stores in the building sharing the same roof. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames.

The cause of the fire, which was confined to the duct work, is under investigation. The restaurant must remain closed because of the fire damage to the ducts and ceiling area and smoke damage elsewhere, officials said.

The stores that were evacuated were expected to reopen shortly.
