Blaze breaks out in Footscray restaurant

A FIRE that started in a wok in a Footscray restaurant took fire crews 20 minutes to bring under control.

Staff were cooking themselves food after the Star Restaurant in Nicholson St had closed for trading just after 11pm.

Oil in a wok caught fire after a burner was left on, but could not be put out with small extinguishers in the restaurant.

The fire ignited oil residues in an overhead flue and spread upwards into the roof.

Flames shot out of the flue, making it appear the whole restaurant was on fire.

It took about 30 fire fighters 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, but more than two hours to put out the blaze.

The damage was estimated at $20,000.
