What is the best way to clean wood pressure treated fences in Florida to remove mold and algae? Too much pressure washing furs the wood. Bleach turns it white. Restraining is too involved. Need opinions. Thanks
 
Sodium Percarbonate through dedicated pump,...or DS'ing Sodium Hydroxide. With either,..then neutralize with Oxalic.

The addition of soap will allow the mix hang on a little better, and also keep it wet a little longer,..allowing it to work

i have been wondering about this as well..

jeff, you say neutralize with Oxalic? can you explain a little more? first time hearing about Oxalic.. what is it? do you spray on after hydroxide has dwelled? after rinsing?

Jim, I have noticed that wood maintenance is non existent here in south florida. So when we are asked to "clean" wood fences and decks, that are 5 years old and have never been properly maintained, we have to use bleach with hydroxide. i usually run 10-20% sh with a small amount of hydroxide beads, nothing super strong like degreaser strength-just to add a little heat and bite, then i give it a good rinsing with a 6530 tip after about 5 minutes or so of dwell. I also neutralize with oxalic acid after rinsing only about 1/2 to 3/4 cup per gallong. BUT....the market down here is weird, they look at you sideways when you educate them on proper wood care and maintenance frequency. Most say for the money they will spend on maintaining their pt fence or deck, they would rather have it balsted and furred and wait for a "storm" insurance claim to remove and replace it. Very little pride for wood around here, but I guess we dont see as much of it as in the other areas of the country. We do have a ton of aluminum, vinyl, and trex for decks and fences. Thats just what I have noticed in my limited time, Jim have you got alot of requests for wood cleaning, proper wood cleaning and maintenance, or is it just the old blast and fur requests??
 
I just chem and rinse. Tell them it will change the color. Looks better than black and green algae
 
Few requests for wood deck cleaning or staining. Mostly paver sealing.

Same thing here in North Fla. I've only been asked to clean 1 wood fence in 8 yrs. I do clean the wood fence that faces the street on every house wash. Makes the job look complete. I use the light ssh with a little caustic. Then mist a little oxalic. In my opinion it isn't perfect, but the customers always like it.

Alot of wood here in NJ and the northeast in general

As far as fencing goes lots of people switching to vinyl although high end clienst like wood

Same with decks

Decks are a B**** as we all know but ill do them if i get the money im asking

Most clients need to be educated in what goes into deck restoration stuff especially the labor end of it

I imagine in the south not many decks??
 
Been doing wood for 20 years I think I've done and take care of one fence and my own fence.

In the last month I've taken care of 2 garappa decks ,a camuru , A few mahogany, 4 ipe's and currently doing a cedar house restoration with a ipe deck.
