Briggs sells a wiring harness for the Vanguard that is pretty self explanatory. Depending on the regulator that is on your engine there are 2 choices. Call a B&S dealer with your model, type, and code #'s and they'll get you the right part. The orange wire goes to the terminal on the solenoid where the battery hot hooks up. The yellow wire goes to the solenoid activator terminal ( 1/4" slide on), the brown wire is a ground for the solenoid. If you have only one 1/4" slide on, put the brown under a solenoid mounting bolt, if there are 2 terminals on the side you must use one of those for the ground. B&S factory part has 1, some aftermarket have 2. The red wire plugs into the red coming off the regulator, and the black slides on the terminal by the fan cover. This is your engine ground. By now you're asking "what about the white wire off the regulator?" This is used only on lawn tractors, etc. as a power supply for headlights. If the wiring has been burned up on this machine you also need to check the wire that goes between the ignition coils and the ground. This wire has 2 diodes in it and if 1 goes bad, then one coil will ground out the other and your engine will only run on 1 cylinder.
