What's Up With Chevron?

This morning I stopped at a Chevron convenience mart in Beaverton, Oregon to pick up a pack of smokes. Now, keeping in mind that I am well into middle age, the girl asks to see my I.D! I ask her why and she says it's a new corporate policy to card anyone who looks younger than 80. She then pointed to a placard on the counter that had a picture of an old lady on it and said "if you're younger than 80 you must show I.D to purchase tobacco products". Swear to God!

I was thinking I must be on Candid Camera. I told her my I.D. was out in my truck, but she said I'd have to go out and get it. I told her to tell whoever the rocket scientist was at corporate that dreamed this up to go piss up a rope and I left.

So I drive about a mile away to a 7-11, which is where I usually go and know the clerks there. I asked him if he knew the Chevron down the street, but he stopped me and asked if they'd carded me. As he's laughing he told me I was the fifth guy this morning that came in pissed off with the same story!

Bet this stupid policy doesn't last long and someone gets fired!

There are convenience stores here that have a policy that if you don't look at least 45 or older you have to show id or go without.

They were talking about a new tax on top of the other taxes, something like 90 cents per package.

It is kind of like buying alcohol, show id or don't buy.

That's good for 7-11 , years ago it Was south land Corp . Who owns 7-11 now?

In Oregon you don't have to show ID to buy alcohol unless you don't look to be 21.

But the Chevron deal is part of the continuance of dumbing down in America. What's next? How about requiring background checks before you can buy a pressure cooker?

Don't think they have owned them for a long while, I've been wrong before. Tosco owned circle k years back. Someone else does now.

Down here they changed the name of almost all of the Circle K locations to Stripes (red and white stripes in a square box is their new logo). I thought that they started here as they have a corporate office here, owned by Susser Petroleum.

We used to have 7-11 here along with some other convenience stores but eventually Circle K took over, bought them out or the other guys just closed up many years ago but they said in a news announcement last year that we are getting some 7-11 back here either sometime this year or next year, they said about 6 or 7 locations. Competition is usually a good thing.

It might be only Chevron in your part of the country but down south it is a big problem with minors trying to buy tobacco and alcohol so many places have signs on the doors and counters talking about showing your id, some say that if you look under 35, under 45, and other ages so that people are informed as they walk in and then again at the register that they will be asking for id.

A lot of places are making this thing idiot proof by having a calendar there that each day you just look at the calendar and it says that they have to be born later than a certain day of a certain month of year instead of trying to do simple math in their heads to know if they are old enough to buy. A lot of places have been stung by undercover cops and setups and have lost their liquor license or tobacco license in these sting operations.

Big Corporate wants those big dollars so they are going to do what they have to do to keep those licenses and keep on selling those products to keep customers coming in the doors. It will probably get worse in your area, everyone down here is used to it and you hardly ever hear anyone complain because of all the signs unless they are from out of town or out of state.

Circle K was started in Phoenix in the early 60's. They have been bought and sold so many times that a cheap hooker would be envious. I don't even know who owns them now, or where they are based.

You should have told them you were an undocumented worker and then sued them for having the audacity to ask you for an ID.

Actually Tony, I am an undocument worker. That's because nobody's ever seen me working. Think Gus in Lonesome Dove.
