The topic of paying employees, once you transition from a 1 man crew to 2-3 men crews, has always had lots of discussion.

Some proclaim that paying a percentage of the job with incentive bonuses each month works best for them.

Others pay an hourly wage.

In the years of experience that this board has in running and operating multi-crews cleaning hoods, what has worked best in your experience?

I pay based on the California requirements. We pay a hour rate plus a Safety and Quality Incentive, based on a % of the billed amount. Plus overtime after eight hours.

I find that if I troll the day labor sites then get a few helpers for a job. I then finish and stop at the INS office and ask them how much they want , when they run off I then file it as a loss on taxes and remember to write the milage off too.

Just kidding, pay hourly with incentives I give them 30% of the first clean if they line a job up for me.

By The Night, In town $125.00 Out of town $150.00, average work hours between 7 & 8 hr's per night. When i am out of town, i pay for drinks, meals, hotels.

My accomplice pays his guys this way. $300.00 a week plus $50.00 a job.
His guys work like dogs and have been with him for years. He must be doing something right.

I pay my employees a salary ( 1000-1300gross )for a 5 day week roughly 7:30 - 5 plus full health benifits including dental.

We have a great HMO health plan, 30 copay, no hospital charges for stays, a 50 ER co pay and $15 perscriptions. Our dental covers 2 free cleanings and they have to pay the first 50 of the first visit, after that the dental is free up to 1500 per year.

Our business is seasonal and I pay the insurance even when we are closed. I find that the loyalty I get is invaluable and can always count on my guys to do A+ work and treat the customer right.

Since going to this system I have 0 turn over and my highly trained and professional employees return every season.

Each guy operates his own vehicle and is on his own all day. Our goal is 0 complaints and perfect work and we almost always obtain it.

I know you have quite a number of employees so you 'd easily qualify for group rates but for others the minimum number is 2.

I don't think you can get them to insure you unless you're in NJ but they may have other BCBS in your state. It's worth a call.

I also know what you mean about shopping for insurance. Between Workers comp, health, auto and an umbrella I feel like I have some unwanted partners.

Our employees get paid hourly. Bonuses are based on accomplishments. We offer benefits for them and they work 2,000 + hrs. / yr.

Employees are a big issue .. I sometimes hire subcontractors for large jobs.. I have pretty much always been a one man operation.. even when I worked for other people back in the 80's and 90's... I have a issue with being real meticulous about my cleanings.. I know that I do it right 100% of the time..

Ron,
We have been doing the same for 11 years. If we have a good year our employees benefit. Bonuses are based on what we do and our profit. We have been lucky that we have not fallen into the hole many others have, the past few years. Our employees know the work they do makes us more profitable. They know if they do not produce and we have low profits, they will feel the results. We have not had any problem keeping everyone busy. We just hired a third full time and another for the Summer. We have never used subs. If we are offered a project too large for us, we pass it onto another company. Thank You.
