I was talking about my projects for this week during the live feed of the Atlanta round table. Just thought you might be curious some of the other stuff that I do. This type of thing is about 5% of my business.

I just move and install them.

I am pretty heavily involved with transit industry facilities maintenance. In Arizona, anything that has to do with transit facilities, including cleaning, requires a contractors license.

I thought you washed them?

.... got it sewn up, install them and then the maintenance washing!!!

That's what I like about my sideline (mainline?!?!) is that I can sell pressure washing, pool cleanups, pool deck and patio, pool screens/cages, painting and then get the monthly/quarterly/annual maintenance on pool service.

are you a license general contractor Scott?

He is a license contractor...

I am a licensed contractor. I am actually licensed to pressure wash in Arizona. There are very few of us that are, but it does not stop anybody.

What are the requirements for a contractors license in Arizona?

It depends on the license you want, since there are so many. Mine is a specialty license, so, I made my own requirements, but it is in a narrowly defined area. I am probably going to continue with this for a while then get a general license, but that is down the road, when construction gets moving again. I want to have it when stuff starts up, so that I can catch the wave. We have a lot of contractors here that were huge that have recently folded up their tents and stolen away in the night.

The trucks are not mine, but I do have a CDL. I thought about just renting a crane and doing it, but decided for just a quick job, it would be more feasible to hire someone.
The crane company I used was my first customer when I was only washing trucks. We grew up together, and I was the owners project. As soon as he decided that I wasn't going to fail, he took the washing in house, and it looks it. He is still a great guy, and is always happy to see me when we run in to each other. He runs 20 cranes, and has one that he just bought that he bought for $3 million. I am going to have to go to his yard and check it out. It is all computer controlled.

How much do those weigh? My lift is a 700 lb crane.

Maryland has an exam you have to take , with 2 years experience, insurance proof, bank statements etc. thats for a Maryland Home Improvement License (MHIC) and they define what is home improvement.

Some other occupations you just have to be certified, example, waste water plant operator.

One does, and one doesn't work for the city. Once it is in the air, there is not a lot for them to do. The crane company rigs it, secures it on the truck, and transports it.
They weigh a lot more than 700 lbs. The 4x4 tubes are 3/8 inch steel. There are 2x2 side panels that we had alreagy removed that weigh close to 400 lbs. I am guessing that it weighs close to 3000 lbs.
The Maryland requirements are really similar to teh Arizona requirements. You have to take a knowledge test, and a business test, so that they know that you are not some hack. Not that it matters.
