Brings up a good question - do you balance a s/c fan? Upblast, mushroom, and most other centrifigal fans are pretty straightforward, but I have difficulty with s/c fans. Local hvac guys I have talked to won't touch 'em. The local electric motor shop, from whom we buy fans, also declined to balance them. You do 'em yourself?

Whew thanks Matt I was getting the shakes!
I watched a guy balance a SQ fan once. He removed the belt so the heaviest fan blade would spin to the bottom; he then simply drilled a hole in the opposite blade and inserted a bolt and nut. It worked like a charm for him. He said he had done many fans that way, and he has had to put a second bolt in a second blade before. This is obviously not the recommended way to do it and I would not recommend doing this way. I could foresee me drilling whole after whole in blade after blade and only making it worse.
I did with limited success use those giant paper clips to balance a regular up blast fan, they may have worked better but I had to put them on the inside of the blade so they would stay on when the fan was turned on.
It was a store that called because the other Exhaust Company had just cleaned it and it was shaking the roof and he could not get in touch with them. It was a temporary fix until I could get back to reclean the blades which solved the problem completely.
Funny thing is it has been two years and the guy keeps saying I'm not ready yet every time I call to schedule

Thanks for sharing your experiences! Your (and others) valuable insight is what makes this board worthwhile. They say that simplicity is genius. I was making it too complex - guess I'll never reach the genius level.
After thinking about it, I guess if you drilled enough holes you would eventually reduce the mass enough so that it could never get out of balance. Hmmm, maybe I am a genius after all!
In respect to your comment about the guy who puts you off after you saved his bacon - it once again reminds me that no matter how good a job; how dependable, courteous, & honest you strive to be; there is absolutely no loyalty accorded a lowly flue cleaner.

I wouldn't have believed it myself, I was on a roof and I see this guy messing around with a fan to another restaurant, so I walk over and start talking to him and he balancing a fan. (I almost laughed at him) he was nice enough to let me hang around and to my surprise in about 10 minutes he has this thing purring like a kitten.
