Water Filtration Box

Why not just buy one ready made designed to work as it should. There's a lot of research and testing to these units before an actual working model can be produced. You may go through hours of nerve wracking assembly, materials sourcing, and pondering, and still not end up with the result you want.
You also have to consider your time as money. You have to run around buying parts and assembly and testing.

Hi Russ,

Just trying to defray some of the costs to get setup for reclaiming. I'm going to be getting a high quality vac + 55 gallon tank, hose, vacuberm, utility pump for auto pumpout, oil booms, etc...

All of my work currently is residential. Just wanting to do some basic filtration before returning the water to a grassy area on property. Would several of the 20" polishing filters in series work for this? You can buy those at any hardware place along with the filter in different sizes.

Thanks,

Mike

Just throw down a couple of oil socks if that is all you are wanting to do. The reality of enforcement on a residential job would be one in a million in this area. Save yourself a couple grand.

Oil socks are great , and they work...I can buy a pack of 10 for like 4$ and they come in various lenghts and the great thing is you can take em home and dry them out and reuse them again and again...until they fall apart. (but dont put them in the dryer:eek: )

Unless you are washing down a driveway, I have NEVER had runoff from a residential job...usually the grass catches it all.

Is everyone ready for the cheap way out?
Okay this is just an Idea. May be a Redneck approach but, I see potential.

Go to Home Depot or your Local Pet Store.

Hmmm Yes you got it right.

Buy a Large Pond Filter System. They are like a Large Planter Pot with Several filters inside.

Those hardware store filters will clog very easy. They are made to polish city water not nasty water.

Pond filters are for ponds, they filter fish turds, sand, silt, leaves etc. they are not for the water we pick up, or the chemicals we use.

Go with what Russ said and buy a box that is ready made and has the bugs worked out. Unless you like to troubleshoot on the job.

You think you don't pick up turds, sand, silt, leaves etc?
Wow that sounds like the stuff a Reclaim deals with to me!
Even the Hydrotek Flatwork system does not deal with Soap Acid and other chemicals. But it is $5000 This system would cost what $500 Max and filter better. All you need to do is clean after every job.

Trust me I work on these so called systems every day.

Water Treatment Tech and Water Boy are sold as "basic filttration" they will not handle soaps very well either. A snad filter helps for that if combined with a carbon filter as well.

I blow all areas prior to recovery, so very little is left to pick up in the way of solids. Mostly dust. I tried that fish filter awhile back and blew the area as usual first. It did not work for very long before it was a pot of mud.

Best defense in filtration is a solids seperation drum that allows most heavy items to fall to the bottom before the water gets pumped for polishing.

What is your take on centrifigul seperators? and inline chlorinators?

Oppsz I forgot the cone tanK as Alan discribed. He is absolutly correct.
Why Chlorinate for City Sewer. Chlorinators are for water reclaims that sit in a wash bay and reuse the water. If you dump it on site you do not need it. If you have a wash bay well that is different.

As for centrifigul seperators, they are great for stationary reclaims but portable machines do not needx to be that fancy yet.
Keep it simple.

What is a snad filter? Did you mean sand filter? Just want to make sure that I understand.

Only time that I deal with runoff is when cleaning a driveway otherwise I divert to the grass. I use oil socks as well.

Are cone tanks common setups for a mobile system?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi John,

Thanks for the ideas. It looks promising for me since I won't have the need to reclaim very often. Should be fine for occasional use.

Mike

Bit on the small side. The bigger the better as it will not need cleaning as much and will allow the solids to seperate better.

Where are the ideal places on a cone tank to put your lnlet hose from vacuum and your outlet to the polishing filters?

Thanks,

Mike

Removing solids before they can enter the drum is ideal. A pool leaf filter canister can be had for around $60.00 at most pool stores. It will hold alot of junk, but the more it holds the more vacuum you lose. Hydro tek uses one of these on their new filter cart set up. Carpet Cleaners also use one of these before the waste tank, but those have 2" inlets vs the 1.5" on the pool version.

Here is a pic of a company that makes a homemade clarifier.

Alan,

Are you suggesting this instead of a cone tank?

Thanks,

Mike
