Washing Aluminum siding

Hi folks, I have a client that wants us to wash Aluminum siding so they can paint it, they said the paint store guy said they needed to use a soultion called TSP, that is the only way to clean the aluminum so the paint will stick.

My Question is, is this true or can I use my soap & SH soultion instead of this TSP?

Thank you
Alan

Hi Alan,..many different scenarios with aluminum siding. Sometimes it can be simply cleaned up and painted with little oxidation to deal with,..usually the kind with texture,..like a wood grain look didn't seem to oxidize as bad as the smooth finish aluminum siding,...not sure why. Aluminum siding takes more of evaluation than vinyl,..albeit,..paint prep should be "simpler" because you WANT to remove as much as you can,..as opposed to just cleaning,..where you have to be careful. In my experience TSP isn't as effective as a strong Hydroxide mix,..usually mixed with a butyl based gutter cleaner,..and done on a hot day if possible.

But if for some reason it is simply dirty and moldy,..then simply do a wash job,..but it will likely have oxidation to some degree.

*If you've never done aluminum paint prep or washing in general, be prepared for a learning experience.

Thank you Jeff, sounds like if I give it a wash with my soap and sh it will have some ofidation? so in that case would they be able to paint over it?
