uv light exhaust hood

I was just reading a restaurant trade magazine"restaurant startup & growth"
August 2004,and they have a good article on restaurants controlling grease. In the article they mention a new exhaust system that has a uv light system that zaps the grease vapors, and turns the grease vapors into carbon dust and water vapor, eliminating most of the grease build up in the system after the filters. It lists the mfg'ers as Halton and Ventmaster. It says in the article that this technology is very new,and is just starting to be used.I was wondering if anyone has come across one yet?

About two years ago we were approached by a manufacturer (not Ventmaster and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Halton) they wanted us to do retrofit installations of the UV system. They assured us the product was so wonderful that within a couple of years all restaurants (yea right!) would switch over to their system. Well, my first though was why would I want to sell a product that promises to eliminate 90% of duct grease, that would cut down on my business. So I decided to wait and see what the industry direction would be. Well here we are two years later and you are the first one to mention UV light.

I have known about uv light in hvac duct systems for awhile now,to combat mold. This is the first I have heard of it in a kitchen exhaust hood.I can see how it would kill mold spores, but I don't see how it would be hot enough to cook grease,so to speak into carbon and water vapors.I am of the same opinion as you Grant, and glad it did not take off.The article was good in that it stressed hiring a qualified KEC company to service their systems atleast quarterly, and to have a regular filter maintenance program in place. The July issue had an article about maintaining restaurant hvac systems and also stressed exhaust hood maintenance, atleast they are getting the word out to new restaurant owners about the importance of a regular KEC program.

A few years back I heard a guy in Florida was developing a filter that would capture 90% of all grease vapers.

Wonder what happened to this Gentleman.

UV light

Ventmaster now makes a pollution control unit that uses UV light.
Instead of electrostatic cells it has a bunch of purple lights in it.
The first one of it's kind and was installed at Hollywood & Highland (a newer mall in Hollywood). I remember looking at it during the start up on it - it's the size of a school bus.

From what the installer told me it is very expensive to maintain and has some filters that have to be changed every 6 months that are very very expensive - much more expensive than the maintenance on a "Smog Hog" or "Trion". I think the number was like 50K to replace all the filters...but my memory could be falty.

Based on the cost alone I don't think it'll catch on very quickly.
I wouldn't mind changing the filters for 50K

I have read where some were placed in cruise ships. Titanic maybe he he.
I dont think they were as extravagant as what you described above.
It was a much smaller system. Had to be, it was in a smaller galley on a ship.
