For the first time in nine years Shelly and I were able to take some time away without kids, family members, temporary house guests or anybody.
This trip served to reaffirm my deep love for my wife after all these years. It was like there was never a nine year gap of time without being alone.
When I look at Shelly I still see the same girl I married over 13 years ago.
If anything we've become much closer, much more forgiving and much more understanding of each other over those years. That made this trip all the more special.
There was some work involved. We spent two days shadowing Ron and his top salesman. This is Shelly's first time in sales after 10 years of running her own business and, as usual, Ron was willing to help us out.
I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my loyalty and friendship with Ron. I doubt there is anyone here who has spent more nights in a hotel room with Ron. I doubt there is anyone here who has spent more hours on the road with him. We've been accused of logging in under false names because his name comes up with my IP address because he's using the WIFI at MY house!
I've heard all the complaints. I've listened to all the stories. I've listened to exaggerated stories about Ron when the teller of the story had no idea I was sitting right next to Ron when the conversation in question was going on!
Bottom line is this. Ron is one the the best things this industry has going for it. He's generous, boisterous, outgoing, loud, caring, and is a progressive thinker. He is the ULTIMATE little guy in this business. He may not push a wand, but he knows what pushing a wand is like. He can identify with most guys unlike any other "big guy" in the business.
Lou said it best at lunch Friday. He said something to the effect of "Everytime I get together with Ron, it seems like he's really a good guy" (or something similar to that)
YES he is. Give him a phone call and get to know him. He's a human being just like you and me. He makes mistakes, just like you and me. The only difference is, his mistakes get publicized and told over and over again in the background until his reputation looks nothing like the real man.
If you find yourself on the tail end of a fight with Ron, call him up and find out why. Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes of heart to heart to heal problems.
I'm proud to be a friend of Rons.
And Ron. Thank you again.
