Thousands of stores to close

It's sad to see America going through this. I think things will start turning around sometime in 2009 though. Things have to get worse before they can get better. I have a good feeling about 2009. Not because people will be using our service but I've gaining knowledge in the past few years to know how to go out there and land new accounts.

I think it will get worse before it gets better, but I'm optimistic about it too. I'm trying to concentrate my sales efforts on businesses that traditionally do well in tough times.

That many stores close and alot of pressure washer's are gonna be hurting to say the least...
Was in Circuit City tonight and clerk said they closed no stores here and that they got a big chunk of money...not sure when or how that went down. He does not think they will be going under this year due to it and mentioned apparently the forces that be think they viable. Anyone got any info on that? I mean I know I miss alot on the banking stuff but did I miss something of store bailouts now?..

I worry about loss of product variety and monopoly effects on the whole store thing. Nothing worse then having to buy junk and having to pay rip off prices the same time.:(

I went to wal-mart tonight and there food section had many items missing. Half the cereral was gone, trash bags, toilet paper, etc.. thought it was wierd. I think people are still buying food just cutting back on everything else.

I heard that some companies were cut back on the avaliable credit and couldn't keep the shelfs stocked.

I think it will get worst. I think 09 will have it's ups in downs... It just would be nice to see some positive things going on this year. Gas is cheaper that's a plus. ;)

I'm going to try and stay positive. I will still set my goal to try to make more money in 09 then ever before. If people stay positve I think our country will revive much faster.

Did you stop to think that maybe the stores that are closing are the ones that are not currently paying their pressure washing bill? In my opinion, we have been overpopulated for a long time in different types of stores. It is amazing when you see a starbucks on every corner, three convenience stores on nearly every corner, and a Home Depot or something similar in every neighborhood. I have 4 home depots that are less than 10 minutes from my house, and another 4 an additional 10 minutes from my house. Something is going to have to give, since a typical hardware store, such as ACE is planned to support a population of one person a square foot, meaning that if a store is in a target market of 10,000 people, that it is a 10,000 foot store.

That is interesting info there Scott..Irony has it I was looking just today at demographics of neighborhoods and the amount of people in an area sure can vary. My little area has 59k people and but the closest Aces or HD'S would seem to cover maybe 3 or 4 such sized neighborhoods before the next store would take over. But then If I look at some places back east in FL there only 6k of people. All depends on neighborhood being more rural versus urban. Hard call if there is enough or too many of the bigger stores. Always seem packed around here. The little starbucky things though yea fer sure they too many. That said not everyone buys at the hardware store or starbucks anyways.. If the stores are closing then it either they overbuilt or I suppose somebody else took their market share.

I go back to my childhood. We didnt have food stores on every other corner. each town or other town would have a grocery store and on Saturday they would be packed have 10 cashiers working hard, bag boys running crazy. Now you go into some any time day or night they have one or two cashiers and hardly any customers. Those were profitable places. Now you have all kinds of store smae companies competing with each other. One home depot is taking biz away from the other. Way to many I have thought that for years

Gift Cards

Make sure you use your gift cards quick! :) There was a piece online a few weeks ago warning people of purchasing gift cards from stores that are potentially closing.

Unfortunately I also beleive it will get even worse before it gets better.

Might be a good time to open your own bank and apply for some of that bailout money.

Or maybe you're one that has faith that Obama is going to send you a "distribution of wealth" check.

This is by far the worst economic recession I have witnesses. My home value has depleted over 35% in the past 18 months.

Business wise in the PW industry its going to be a good year for many. Just wait and see.

Those who have been around for several years will expand as others will fall

I just want 2009 to get here and start rocking. We will get through it just going to have to work hard bringing in new customers. Anyone just sitting back waiting for the work to come in, you might as well close up now. Be aggressive getting the new work

Bring it on 2009

I know a couple of guys who have packed it up already. So to fill that void , we are about to flood our market with advertising. Starting with TV commercials, and door to door sales. We've got 800 spots/month beginning to air on or around January 5th, depending on how production goes this weekend.

We hardly advertised at all this year, and did pretty damn good. My goal is to double 08 in 09. I think if we make it through this current economic climate, we will thrive in good times.

Here is a Follow up Link to Tony's post. No matter where you Stand on the issue, I think we opened a can O Worms with all this Bailout stuff. I will take a hit from retailers closing as I do only Retail Centers and I don't know what to think about this, One center of mine had a Circuit City in it and it was closed Christmas Eve and I think only the Strong will survive this next 6 months or so. I hope things turn around and they do the right thing to get us moving forward again, But right now it is anybodies guess what is coming down the road. Lets hope they Keep better TABS on where the Money go's because they have not done a good job so far.

Here's the link I was talking about.

Its horrible how they pissed away a lot of this bailout money. Now I dont know if its right or wrong, probably wrong but the gov/obama and all are going to pump so much money into 2009 I think some of this all might turn around. many businesses will fall even with all the bailout money. But if our gov can look long term with the money is going to go we might just be able to have a future couple good decades after a bumpy 2009 and probably part of 2010. Its like selling a roof cleaning. I try to explain to people its not just being cleaned to make it look good, it should be cleaned to last. If they use the next bailout money to fix things and create things our economy can flourish agin. If they just keep wasting and not have guidelines this same thing will happen again. We have to do things that will help our country last and be strong

Its going to be tough but if the people keep telling the gov, no more pork, no more bridges to no where we have a good chance. many may not like Obama, but if he can navigate, comprimise and just get our gov working at 50% for the people he may just help pull us through stronger. If he just goes to the left and stays there not much will change. We have to work towards the middle and work a little left and a little right. even and steedy I hope will be what works

Time will only tell

Yea I just don't trust the Gov much at this point with not adding Pork. I wish Obama well and I hope he does things for both sides as this is all of our country and I don't want to see it fail, we all loose.

I can only Pray that things improve here this year and I hope it is the next few months to tell you the truth, Like I said I wish him well and I hope things go good for us. Maybe he will Surprise the Country and be a Great President and not just an average President.

I for one will hold out Judgment until he becomes president and see which moves he makes first and I think he will have his hands full just with the middle east right now and the economy as it seems.

Believe me I may be a democrat but I am holding judgement too. I don't trust any of them, he will have to prove himself. No matter what he's in for some rough times. Ya the Middle East, its like, WHY now.

Actually, if you are thirty you have experienced a worse recession. When Reagan came in office interest rates were unbelievable, and unemployment was high. After a year or so, interest rates were over 20% and unemployment was 10.2%. That was pretty bad, but we recovered quickly because Reagan was willing to take that initial hit to correct the economy, and then get back on track. The problem now is that everyone is so politically motivated, instead of having the necessary backbone, and narcissistic, that they think they can resolve the problems and provide a soft landing, and do it in an unnatural way. That is why we pulled out of the last Major recession relatively quickly. When Roosevelt went into office in '32, he had the same attitude that is the prevailing attitude now, did not allow a hard landing, and the economy stayed bad for 9 years, then we had the war years, which really helped the economy, because so many people went back to work, and had nothing to spend money on, so that they saved like no other. It probably helped them save because they had just come out of the depression, and everyone was fearful that as soon as they came out of the war the depression would just continue. Instead, housing boomed, with home subdivisions being built for the first time. (Leavittown in New York was the first major subdivision, before that, no one had ever tried to build one before) Lots of people went back to school, and people were spending like no other to just get back where they were before the war started.

The problem now, besides lack of leadership, is that there is no national cohesion, or sense of purpose, and it is causing people to feel over whelmed and to pull back inside themselves. On a positive note, it is causing people to be more frugal than they have for years. That same frugality is a two edged sword, though because people are not spending.

That's a good point Scott. I think you are on to something. Also if these stores thinned out a little they would be more profitable and would likely pay for regular service.
