This one has me perplexed...

Here is the scenario:
18 hp Briggs Vnguard. General TS2021 pump. Hot water heater with 12 volt ignitor. Belt drive.
This is the machine that I use most, since it is a single machine on a small trailer. I let one of my employees use it, because it also holds about 425 gallons of water, and he needed that much capacity for the project he was on. I got a note from him the other night saying "Scott, the machine will not start. It will not even turn over."
Today, I go to start the motor. I hear a click. So, I pull the starter cord, and it still won't turn. This is starting to look really ugly. I take off the recoil starterand put a breaker bar on the crank, since I cannot easily get to the rear pulley. I push on it, and fill a click. I then, using the starter, start the machine up, with no problem.

So the question is, How short a life on this motor am I in for? Also, just what could it have possibly been? I am thinking a burr on the crank or cam, but this motor is about 3 years old, and probably has 3000 hour on it. I would think anything like that would have been polished off by now.

Any ideas?

could just be a bad starter, check the wires going to and from the starter.

You shouldn't have any major problems, Scott. Many times the starter gear jams a little in the flywheel. If the starter can't get a little inertia going, it can't turn. The starter drive may be going bad, or the starter may just need replacing. Or it just might need a shot of penetrating oil on the starter shaft. You can spray the shaft from the outside by removing the crescent shaped guard over the starter drive, have someone crank the engine (so the drive reveals the shaft), and give her a shot. If it happens again, you can remove the guard and move it back in with a screwdriver.

Now that is something that I can deal with. Thanks.
