Wow... here we go again.
I, in no way, want to get into a religious debate, but for what it's worth... Romans 13 is the crux that many "Christians" rely upon for their "legal authority" argument. In my opinion, Romans 13, has nothing to do with the "legal system" whatsoever. It has to do with the church and their religions thereof.
I have had this discussion many times in the past, and one in particular was with my brother (a faithful Christian) who's been with the Sheriffs Office for more than 28 years. He says [paraphrasing] "the Bible says you must submit to the government..." and "without government we would have total anarchy...". This is complete nonsense.
I don't believe the reference "... that religion, or a belief in God causes people to blindly follow authority" is out of line. Think about it for a minute... people go to church and they listen to an "authority" speak on the subject of "authority" and reference Romans 13 as their evidence. That evidence has been sculpted to do just that... get people to blindly follow "authority". It's all about faith, is it not? Have "faith" in the "authority" to do what's right.
The part that gets me fired up the most is the radical change from the KJV to the NKJV wherein "higher powers" is substituted with "governing authorities". Why would they make such a drastic change between versions? The only reason I can think of is control (controlling the masses). Nowhere on this planet is there a more captive audience than in church. I'm not a theologian and I don't profess to be a scholar in any related subject either, but damn... that's a massive change in the meaning of the message.
Romans 13 is briefly referenced in this video.
BTW, what is the misinterpretation in Romans 13 that you mentioned?
