The Little Man

Yesterday I was washing a house and had my new MP3 player that I got from Walmart going and the song Little Man by Allan Jackson started playing and I thought to myself there is alot of truth to the words.

How many of us use the local small time mom and pop stores and merchants.Do we go to the local hardware man that sold stuff to our families for years or do we run into Home Depot or Lowes?Who by the way are putting mom and pop out of business.Do we go into the small local gas station or the super truck stop because fuel is 3 cents cheaper?

I am a little man.I have one full time employee which is me and I am going to start using the locals as much as I can because we can't turn the economy around by spending our money in a store that is shipping the profits out of town. The local business owners are the ones who use local contractors.

This was just something that was on my mind.

What are your thoughts on this?

That song big time his home for me! My dad used to deliver bread, pies etc...door to door for many, many years. I remember going with him on his route when I was just a kid. I Used to go every Saturday. When all the local convienence stores started popping up he began to lose a lot of his customers. Eventually he had to pack it in. It was real sad and he struggled to make ends meet for many years before landing a good job. That song always brings back memories. Watch this video. He explains alot in it also. Real good!

I cringed when a Lowes opened 2 miles from my house. I know the local family owned hardware will suffer. I always try to patronize the small companies even if it costs more as dumb as it sounds. Yes I will buy at Lowes if the hardware doesn't have it. I also patronize the local bait shops instead of Wal-Mart. The big box stores are changing America and not in good way at least that's my opinion.

The last of the good hardware stores closed down here years ago right after a few competitors opened up, kind of like Home Depot but once Home Depot opened up, those guys were gone.

Now we have Home Depot, Lowes and started seeing some ACE hardware stores. They are nice people to deal with.

I would rather go to the little stores but not many of them around anymore.

It is sad.

Ace IS the "little man" hardware store around here. I shop Ace whenever I can. They have a good inventory and are good people.

When I was growing up you had Sears and JC Pennys but they were about it as far as big stores go. It still seemed to me that there were plenty of smaller stores around still then too. I agree with others here that we were better off without these huge chain stores that sell everything under the sun, push the little stores out of business and in my opinion hurt thier suppliers in the long run. I try to shop the smaller locally owned stores whenever I can too.
