HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- A Hall County veteran will get a fresh start after his home burned to the ground.

Construction on a new home will begin this weekend, thanks to the generosity of Channel 2 consumer adviser Clark Howard and the public.

Veteran Michael Walker and his wife were returning home from Fort Stewart in April when they learned that their mobile home had burned to the ground. Walker told Channel 2’s Diana Davis it was an overwhelming blow.

“I was kind of heartbroken because everything was brand new in the house. It sounds kind of cliché, but I just started praying a lot,” Walker said.

The Walkers paid off the land with the insurance settlement but had no money left to rebuild.

After hearing about the tragedy, Howard wrote the couple a $30,000 personal check to fund a Habitat for Humanity home, and he asked the community to match it.

Hall County Habitat for Humanity CFO Danny Sanderson said he was impressed by how fast donations came pouring in.

“We thought maybe two to three months, and with Clark Howard and his team, we did it in a week,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson said the plans for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home are now ready.

The Walkers said they are thankful and a bit in shock.

“The economy is so bad I didn’t think anything like that would ever come around because everyone is having hard times,” Walker said.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers and the Walker family plan to break ground on the new home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
